Here are some more information for Astro Van:
Astro Van

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower was first isolated (and pinned to an orbital event) in the 1870s, when Lieutenant-Colonel G. L. Tupman observed them while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. As with many astronomical observations of the era, it was catalogued and annotated; it wasn't until William Herschel corroborated the shower with the recent passing of Haley's Comet (and did an orbital plot) that the shower was tied to Halley's comet in 1876.

When observing meteor showers today as then, you will notice they appear to originate from a hidden point in the sky, this is called a radiant. The radiant for the Eta Aquarids is near the star Eta Aquarius, and varies in inferred size by 5 to 7 degrees depending on celestial mechanics. The meteors streak across the sky from a point in space near the star; tracing the paths they make will take you back to this point of origin.

Due to the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the angle the meteors appear at, shifts by a few degrees each night, moving generally eastward and towards the ecliptic (south in the Northern hemisphere, north for the Southern hemisphere.).

One of the unique aspects of the Eta Aquarids is that they're more readily observable from the Southern hemisphere; this resulted in a paucity of observations from their confirmation until the mid 1920s, when Australian and New Zealand amateur astronomers started tracking them. Most years, the Aquarids peak around the 5th or 6th of May, with roughly 30 meteors per hour showing up at the peak from the southern hemisphere, and roughly half that visible to people north of the Equator. (The reason for this is simply that the part of the sky the meteors radiate from is higher in the sky for the Southern hemisphere.) The predicted peaks are usually 15-20/hr for the Northern Hemisphere and for those of us fortunate enough to be in the Southern Hemisphere up to 35/hour on the morning of the 5th and 6th of May! The activity for 2011 is yet to be maped.

Most meteor showers are gravel and sand-grain sized specks that are left over from the nucleus of a comet as it passes the Sun. Remember that a comet's tail is always going to point away from the sun, and that's where the "train" of gravel and sand comes from. You can think of the entire ellipsoidal path that Haley's comet makes around the sun as being filled with a streamer of sand and dust, all moving at its orbital velocity; over the course of decades, this orbit and the Earth's change, and eventually the Earth passes through this debris field. When it does, these objects impact the upper atmosphere and burn up.

If you're willing to stay up late (or get up early), this is a naked eye observation event. You'll have best viewing around 3 to 5 AM local time. If you're just getting into the fascinating hobby of watching the night skies, this is a good place to start. The objects are bright, move noticeably across the heavens, and only require your naked eyes to see them. More than a few will leave visible streaks that will linger for a half second or more, making them quite memorable and noticeable. The Eta Aquarids, like their sister shower the Orionids in October (also from Comet Haley), are one of the better annual showers to observe from the Southern Hemisphere, because of where they show up in the sky. In comparison to the Geminids and Leonids, they're much more visible for the Southern hemisphere observer.

If you're worried about getting hit by something from the sky, you should be! However it's not going to be from a meteor shower. The big hazard is earth-crossing asteroids, like Apophis (but that's a story for another day). While the Earth takes on about 14 million tons of meteoric dust in a year, the grand total, when compared to the mass of the Earth's atmosphere, is negligible.

What is potentially interesting is that some say the seeding blocks for life came from meteoric dust; this is part of the theory of "PanSpermia" by Sir Fred Hoyle. While not widely trafficked in astro biological circles, it hasn't been ruled out entirely. Certainly, anything that could survive both the vacuum of space, crossing the Van Allen belts, and survive the thousand degree temperatures of crashing through the atmosphere would be quite durable and would likely out compete anything it found on the ground. On the other hand, it's great fodder for science fiction stories, particularly down here in Australia, where our experiences with invasive species have been so colorful.

All that said, be sure to get up early and enjoy the show, The biggest challenge you are likely to face will be the chill morning air and waking up! However, I find a good meteor shower like the Eta Aquarids is worth the effort.

My America - discrimination alive and well

Yes, I said it DISCRIMINATION.

I browse the web on a daily basis for updated news articles and videos on what’s happening in our world and more importantly, at least for me, our country. I am a white American in my early 30’s,  the sole supported of my family of four, struggling for financial security. You won’t hear me whining about it, simply trying to come up with solutions to better my life and my families.

Growing up I would say that I must have been ignorant to the world I live in, not seeing all the discrimination that the media is portraying in American today. I saw all sorts of people, of all different races, in all varieties of positions, all the way to the top of major corporations. I learned very quickly that racial discrimination was alive and well in the US and that the United States Government was part of the problem.

In 2001 I was living on my own and decided to move on to a major university to complete my education. I thought since I was living on my own make a whopping $8 an hour, all I would have to do is apply and they would throw money my way. Whoops! My mistake. Filling out the forms I ran in to a brick wall. The good old faithful question, “What is your race”. I checked the box causation not knowing that I sealed my fate and my financial freedom.

There was no money for me, because I “Made to much money“. Who new that $9 an hour was so much money that I could afford $27K in student loans. I know their are countless individuals who have incurred even more debt that myself, but you can see the picture. I still followed through with my plans and signed away the next 20+ years of my life to making payments on this opportunity that I was given and chose to burden myself with.

Soon after I attended classes, achieving decent grades for someone taking 17 credit hours, working full time. I made good use out f my 1 room efficiency apartment above my parents office. I know, you probably thought that I was living in some fancy condo with all the loot I was bringing in. On a daily basis I drove my self to school in my Ferari - I mean my 94 Chevy Astro Van, just for the opportunity to listen to those around me tell the glorious stoory of how they came to this country for a free education, or even tough they worked at John Deere, being a single mom with as little as one child, the government miraculously found the funds. I finally understood racism in My America.

To my surprise the discrimination was against myself. A young, white or Caucasian American. I was hit hard with this reality when I tried to start a not for profit company with a friend of mine to help kids learn computers and skills such as computer repair, website development, and business. I contacted every state and federal agency out there and finally got someone on the phone to tell me the truth. A gentleman from the great corrupt state of Illinois told me that there would be no funds for someone like me, but he was kind enough to run through the checklist for the fun of it. I will never forget that for the rest of my life. He asked me what race I was, which I answered white. He told me that my funding options went from who knows what down to 50%. Then he had one more simple follow up question. What gender are you. I ansered male. In return he told me that there would be next to none available. He went on to tell me that he would deny ever telling me that if questioned but understood how it made me feel.

From that day one my outlook on life changed and more of what went on around me was apparent. Shows such as BET, organizations such as the NAACP, The United Negro College Fund, Black History Month, Hispanic heritage Month, and Ebony Magazine. There are many more but you get the gist of it. I was surprised to see how many all Black colleges there are.

I know from reading this you might say that I am a racist which I can assure you that I am not. I could say that some of my good friends are Blacks and Hispanics. I’ve had friends from Brazil, India, and even Guiana. I know, now some of you are thinking because I’m saying that I’m not racist than I must be. For those of you that do, think what you want. One thing that you can count on, at least for now, is that we live in a free country.

Ideas from across the web:
WET - White Entertainment Television, Ivory Magazine, The United Caucation College Fund,  and persue Caucasion History Month.
