Can I take legal recourse on a car dealership if they don't give me my plates back?

I bought a used car and sold my older car to the dealership. In my haste I forgot to get the plates off the car. The dealership then proceeded to sell my car, WITH THE PLATES ON IT. A couple months later, I got a notice that the car was towed and impounded, by whoever owned the car . They linked the plates back to me. So now I can prove that the dealership sold my car with the plates on it. Do I have any kind of legal case?

Depends on the state, but in many states, the plates transfer WITH the car sale... you don't take them with you.

But, if that's not the case, then you would need to show documentation that you sold the vehicle and transferred ownership; the new owner would then be liable for the impound or any tickets associated with that license plate.
