Beetle Buggy

One of the major concerns for the herb gardener is how to protect plants from insects, plant diseases, and even animals such as deer from nibbling away at their prize herbs.

Companion plants are the natural bug repellents for the home herb garden. They not only aid other plants to grow better, but they deter insects, disease, and animals from eating anything in close proximity. In so doing, they protect your plants without you having to use expensive insecticides which enable you to stay organic. This is particularly important since much of what you grow you probably intend to eat.

There are many herbs and flowers that act as companion plants. While you can certainly experiment, start with plants that are native to your area that insects already recognize.

Some of the more popular companion plants used as natural bug repellents are:

Anise - attracts wasps that will devour aphids that attack nearby plants.

Basil - repels flies and mosquitoes.

Borage -- repels tomato hornworms, Japanese beetles, squash bugs, and cabbageworms, but attracts bees and wasps.

Catnip - repels mice, ants, aphids, flea beetles, and weevils.

Chives - drives away Japanese beetles and carrot rust fly.

Chyrsanthemums - kills root nematodes, and when flowering, repels Japanese beetles.

Coriander - repels aphids, spider mites, and potato beetle.

Dill - repels aphids and spider mites.

Elderberry - when made into a spray from the leaves, will kill aphids, carrot root fly, cucumber beetles, and peach tree borers.

Garlic - repels aphids.

Geranium - repels cabbage worms and Japanese beetles.

Hyssop - deters garden pests from cabbage and grapes.

Lavender - repels fleas and moths.

Mint - deters white cabbage moths, ants, rodents, flea beetles, fleas, and aphids.

Mole Plant - repels moles and mice.

Nasturtium - chases away the squash bug and whitefly.

Peppermint - repels white cabbage moths, aphids, and flea beetles.

Petunias - repels the asparagus beetle, leafhoppers, tomato worms, and Mexican bean beetles.

Radishes - deters cucumber beetles and rust flies.

Rue - will repel aphids, flies, slugs, snails, flea beetles, and Japanese beetles.

Soybeans - repels chinch bugs and Japanese beetles.

Thyme - deters cabbage worms.

Some of the herbs listed here can be made into teas and powders that can be applied directly on herb plants or soaked into the soil. However, we suggest that you consult a garden guide on this approach as some herbs can be toxic in this form and could hurt pets and children.

And finally, companion plants are compatible with some herb and vegetable plants, but not friendly with others. Research companion plants first before you plant and you will have a healthy and bug-free garden every season.

The Good, the Bad and the Buggy

Bugs! Most of us got over liking them somewhere around the age
of 12 after the ant farm went belly up and we began to
appreciate how annoying mosquitoes, wasps and chiggers could be.
Then as adults, we learned to despise roaches, gnats and the
beetles that feast upon our gardens. But as many of you already
know, some of those pesky bugs can actually be good for the
garden. Not all beetles are bad with ground beetles doing their
part to help develop fertile soil. Honeybees are important in
the pollination process in our gardens and many of their more
fearsome cousins love to eat caterpillars and other insects that
devour the leaves of our favorite trees and shrubs. Of course,
we all love ladybugs dining out on aphids, we just have to get
over their tendency to congregate in our windowsills.

In the meantime, here's a brief primer on good bugs and what
they do to help us out in the gardens at Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, NC, and in your garden at home: · Ladybug - Both the
larvae and the adult insects feed on aphids, the bane of the
rose gardener. · Lacewing - These diaphanous little guys look
delicate, but will devour aphids, caterpillars, mealy bugs,
leafhoppers, insect eggs and whiteflies. · Dragonfly and
Damselfly - Naiads (immature state) feed on mosquito larvae
while the adults will rid you of both mosquitoes and moths. ·
Hover Fly - The larvae get their start in the world by devouring
dozens of aphids in a single day. · Bumblebee & Honeybee - These
bees are important for pollination, especially in fruit trees
and, of course, you may be contributing to someone's supply of
honey. · Braconid Wasp - While it may seem contrary to wish for
a wasp, these guys are parasites for European corn borers, leaf
mining sawflies and bark beetles. The lesser evil? · Ambush Bug
- If you can't quite warm up to wasps, Ambush Bugs will rid you
of them along with bees and flies. · Damsel Bug - Another help
for the aphid problem as well as caterpillars. · Praying Mantis
- This one is a bit of a toss-up. The mantis will eat a variety
of insect pests, but it will also eat beneficial insects. ·
Ground Beetles - These largish beetles like to root around under
leaf litter or mulch dining on insect eggs and larvae.

As for inviting all these wonderful bugs into your garden, the
easiest way is to plant flowers and herbs that they like. Many
beneficial insects are fond of herbs including fennel, dill,
cilantro and caraway. You might also try yarrow, coreopsis,
geraniums and wild carrot as attractors. Members of the
sunflower family including asters, cosmos, purple coneflower and
zinnias are insect friendly, not to mention colorful additions
to your landscape. Winter cover crops like buckwheat or clover
are also favorites.

In addition, your beneficial bugs will require water and
protection. Use overhead watering to leave little puddles, or
put out a shallow dish of water that offers hydration without
drowning the insects. As for protection, ground beetles like
mulch or leaf litter, while leafy plants offer flying insects
good hiding places from birds or other predators. And the really
good news is that beneficial insects will actually appreciate it
if you miss a weed or two.

VW Beetle - I want it to wheelie!!!?

Im looking to build a VW Beetle based beach buggy, and was wondering just how powerful it would have to be to wheelie? Im guessing the stock motor wouldn't do it.

Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the answers, reason why is, well, why not! Its more the engineering challange of making it happen then actually doing it.

Im a biker at heart and enjoy restoring ok machines, plus, I want something a little different!

Please dont think though im the sort of person who will be lofting the front away form the lights every chance i get...

Not sure but the stock motor wouldnt, I have a 1598cc 1302S beetle and its 0-60 in 3 hours. I would put a subaru engine (requires a radiator then) or an aircooled porsche engine.

Get your self to the shop and buy volksworld, always some good custom beetles in there...

Water Wonderland: Gone buggy in Arizonan desert
By Linda Montgomery Hinkel Prior to moving to Cochise County Arizona, my beetle exposure was limited and my insect knowledge was even less extensive. On the barrier island of Satellite Beach, Fla., there were drab-colored reptiles in the form of tan lizards scurrying about with each outdoor step, and more than I care to mention brown-shelled snails on the walkways after a rain.   The only ...
