Here are some more information for Beetle Ghia:

The Karmann Ghia was essentially a VW Beetle with a different body shell attached, yet it is considered an elegant sports car. So what constitutes a sports car? For the Karmann Ghia it was all about styling.
In the years following World War II VW had been successfully producing small and efficient automobiles like the Beetle, with a reputation for outstanding reliability. But as time wore on consumers began demanding vehicles with style and elegance, reflecting the changing attitudes at the time. This call was answered by the Karmann Ghia.
The end result however was a car which appealed to 2 very different groups. There were those who wanted a Porsche on a VW budget, and those who wanted a beautiful European touring car that was durable. This was achieved because VW chose to stick to its reliable Beetle chassis, yet covered that Chassis with a shell that was hand built to perfection using methods not seen anywhere else but on the world's finest cars.
Then end result was a car which could not reach 100mph unlike its rivals, but this could easily be overlooked thanks to its beautiful styling and knowing it wouldn't let you down whilst out on the road. During its 18 year production run, around half a million people considered these points more important than thoroughbred racing performance.
It is worth noting that VW emphasized all of the above facts in its advertising. They made it a point to openly declare that it was mechanically identical to the Beetle, and had slogans such as "The 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Slower, but Prettier Than Any Porsche!". This was an honest advertising campaign, and captured the attention of the public. Unfortunately due to high import duties at the time relatively few made it over to the UK, but this didn't stop the car being a huge success at the time and going on to become a classic car.

What are Volkswagen Aircooled Parts?
The Volkswagen aircooled parts of the earlier engines that were found in VW models are signature pieces of a time long ago. Volkswagen aircooled parts made up the aircooled engines in many models of Volkswagens. In contrast are the watercooled engines, which are what most engines are today.
Volkswagen aircooled parts of an engine rely on air circulating over them to cool them. Today, most engines are cooled by liquid coolant that runs through the engine, where the coolant absorbs heat. As opposed to aircooled parts, a radiator or heat exchanger is found in watercooled engines. This is where the coolant releases heat into the air. Even though in the end, the engine is cooled by air, this is not an example of Volkswagen aircooled parts. This would be watercooled, because of the liquid coolant being used. Heat generated by the aircooled parts is released directly into the air.
Some of the main Volkswagen aircooled parts are the metal fins that cover the cylinders on the outside. These increase the surface area that the air can act on.
Some of the models that you would need Volkswagen aircooled parts for are the Beetle, the Bus, the Type 3, the Type 4, the Vanagon, and the Karmann Ghia. The newer models are the ones that would need watercooled parts. These models include the Cabrio, the Cabriolet, the Dasher, the Corrado, Eurovan, Golf, Fox, Jetta, the Passat, the Quantum, Scirocco, and the New Beetle.
Volkswagen aircooled parts make up some of the most versatile internal combustion engines ever produced. Volkswagen has experimented with several versions of the engine from the 1930s to the present. The first vehicle with Volkswagen aircooled parts was the VW bus. The Beetle is probably the most well known of the aircooled engines. All of the Type I Volkswagen Beetles and Buses started out with a 36 horsepower engine, and then a few years later, the Volkswagen aircooled parts came together to give them a 40 horsepower engine on the Type 2 Beetles and Buses.
The history of the cars with these types of engines is a long one; pretty much every car today depends on the watercooled parts to run, not the aircooled ones anymore. However, owners and fanatics of the Beetle still cherish their classic cars, taking care of the car, the equipment, and the aircooled parts, still today.

Volkwagen Karmann Ghia? Best year?
My son has been taken with the VW karmann Ghia. He has expressed a strong desire to buy one of these cars and restore it for personal use. He lives in British Columbia, Canada and will probably try to source a car there or down in California.
What were the best years for these cars?
And how were the convertibles? Were their tops as good as the Beetles?
I would look for a 71-74 model. In late 70 or so they upgraded the swing arm rear end to IRS (independent rear suspension) and made them 12V. They also went to the sought after 1600cc Dual Port engine. Now some of the older models were upgraded to 12V, and had Dual ports put in them, but they lack the IRS. I would look for a coupe myself, lots of moisture and snow and ragtops don't mix!
Now he does realize the original heaters weren't the best, they did make gas heaters as an option, but are hard to find nowadays. I have had a few, including one I put a newer water-cooled Rabbit engine in it, it solved the heat problem! Good luck with your search, I would try to find one as rust free as possible, what little heat you do get from the stock system has to run thru the body!
