Why Are BMW Rear Brakes Larger Than Front?

I'm referring to BMW cars.
I thought that the front will require more effort compared to the rear, why is it that the rear disc brakes are almost the same size, or slightly bigger than the front's?

I have never heard of rear disc being larger than the front disc on normal production vehicles, but if it is the case the front disc calipers probably has more pistons than the rear disc calipers - ie 4 piston (pot) caliper vs. say a 2 piston caliper.
