When it comes to your car, you don't want to mess around! Make sure you get what you need done when it needs to be done. Between getting regular oil changes, tune ups, and just taking care of your car in general, it's important if you want your vehicle to be around for a while.
One thing you can't skip out on is getting your car's brake fluid changed. Don't want to take it into the shop to get it done? Not a problem, just make sure you follow these steps to get the job done.
- Startby parking your car, turning it off and popping the hood.
- Next, find the brake master cylinder. It's usually found on the driver's side of the car next to the engine.
- Take off the cap and look at the color of the fluid. It should be similar to the color of apple juice. If it's not be sure to change it.
- Take your vacuum pump and suction out the old fluid, making sure the tube gets all the way to the bottom.
- Once it's emptied out, get a rag and wipe away any dirt so that the fluid is as clean as possible.
- Now poor your clean fluid in until it reaches the full line.
- You will need to take all the wheels off of your car and get out vacuum pump again. By each tire there is a bleeder valve. You will want to take off the cap and suction your vacuum pump to it.
- Now get a wrench and loosen the bleeder valve.
- Pump your vacuum pump until all the old brake fluid comes out, this is usually 25 pumps worth.
- Now go back to your brake master cylinder and add my fluid.
- Repeat this for the other three tires.
- Once you've finished doing all 4 tires, get ready to test drive. You may notice that your pedal will go all the way down to the floor and the ABS light may come on. When this happens, you will want to pump the brake about 10-15 times so it will firm up. The ABS light should go off after you turn it off and back on again. If it doesn't turn off the first time you will want to unhook your battery (the negative terminal) so that the computer will reset.
As you can see, there are quite a few steps to doing this properly. Take your time, get all the bad oil out, and feel good about saving a few bucks by doing it yourself!

I am repairing the brake lines on my truck?
I noticed that the lines going to the rear wheel cylinders are 3/16, and the fitting size is for a 1/4 inch line. Is it o.k. to repair the line with this setup. I am not shure if the truck came with this setup or they were changed when the brakes were done on it before I baught it. Also the bleeder fitting on the front left caliper is seized. I tried wd-40, heat and wire brushed the rust off of it and it still will not loosen up without breaking. how do it get it loose.
as for the lines that is normal as long as it seals tight and does not leak... as for the front bleeder bummer... be ready to just replace the caliper with a rebuilt one if it is a chevy they are not to bad about 30 bucks at the auto zone if it is a ford maybe 60 bucks if the truck is 10 years or older maybe it would be a good idea to just go ahead and replace both front calipers?????
