Here are some more information for Brake Drums:

Due to the multitude of different materials present in any car, whether it be a classic, vintage or modern vehicle, there is a very specific environment in which vehicles should be stored to maintain condition. Moisture is the cause of rust and mould and it is this which needs to be managed. I have spent (and spend) a great deal of time researching the different opinions and 'best practice' for the storing your pride and joy in the best possible environment.
In summary there are several options.
Heating
Whilst we may believe this is going to be 'good' for your car, there are a several drawbacks. Firstly it's expensive, how many garages are insulated? This means that the heater will be going a lot of time, with a lot of the heat straight out of the roof and walls. Secondly the heat has to come from from somewhere. This usually means that the method of doing this has introduced a fire risk, not ideal. Finally, warm air does not necessarily mean dry air. By heating the air the amount of moisture it can hold actually rises. If you brought your vehicle out of the cold into your nice warm garage, condensation would immediately form on all of the surfaces (similar to taking a milk bottle out of the fridge and into the warmer air of your kitchen).
Ventilation
For air to form condensation it needs to be still. (On a windy cold night you'll never find condensation on your lawn whereas on a cold, still night you will!) By keeping the air moving in your garage it is possible to prevent condensation forming. The downside of this is that the air can still be laden with moisture and wherever the air is allowed to become still (inside the engine bay, exhaust, interior etc) condensation can form starting the rusting or mould process.
Plastic Enclosures
The next step on from ventilating the whole garage is to place the vehicle inside a purpose built enclosure a little larger than the car where powerful fans draw in air through filters to remove any dust particles and then circulate the air around the vehicle. Several manufacturers supply systems that enclose the car completely in a plastic 'bubble.' Advantages are that 99% of dust is filtered out, air is continually being moved by fans to prevent condensation forming. These also have the additional benefit of preventing any objects accidentally coming into contact with the bodywork. The best in our opinion have an internal supporting framework.
Dehumidification
The preferred method of removing moisture from the air and regarded as 'best practice' in the car storage industry is by dehumidifying the storage environment. Dehumidifying allows vehicles stored in a garage to remain condensation and corrosion free. Units reduce and then maintain the humidity. It is important not to dry the air too much as a relative humidity (RH) drier than 55% may dry any wood (dashboards) or leather too much, causing them to warp and crack. Anything 'wetter' than a RH of 55% will allow exposed, untreated metal surfaces to begin the corrosion process. This can include inside the cylinders, brake drums/disks, exhausts and the inside of your cars' chassis. More advanced dehumidifiers have in-built humidistats to ensure that the air does not become too dry or too wet by turning the machines on and off as required.

Keep Your Saab Brakes in Good Condition
Keeping your Saab's brakes in good working order is a vital part of keeping your car healthy and running right. Brake systems for import cars like the Saab are build with minimal thickness in order to save weight, but this unfortunately means that the brake rotors much be replaced rather than simply turned. The second most common cause for failure is overheating or warping from heat, as brake rotors in import cars like the Saab are much more sensitive to overheating.
Here is some information that you absolutely need to know to save money on your Saab brake repairs -
- Visually inspect the condition of your Saab's breaks at least once in a six month period. Keep an eye out for all of the following things.
The Brake Rotors or Discs, pads and drums should be regularly inspected for defects or discoloration. Discoloration may indicate damage from heat, or warping, and defects like cracking, breakage, uneven wear or grooves mean you need to replace the part immediately. Replace your brake drums, rotors and pads immediately if any defects are found. If your Saab has sensors that warn that the pads are worn, replace them as well. The Brake shoes should be evenly worn, and there should be no protruding rivets.
When you are inspecting the brakes, you need to check the wheel cylinders, the hoses, the calipers and the fittings for any chance of leaking hydraulic fluid. You should also check the master cylinder, the reservoir and the proportioning valve assemblies, replacing or rebuilding any faulty equipment as it is needed. If your brake pedal has gotten lower under your foot, you need to look into it, because there are a number of causes for this.
There are a number of sounds that you need to listen for, including squeaking, rhythmic noises, constant braking noises, and so on. As soon as you notice a problem of any type, you should take it in to be repaired immediately. If you delay the repair of your brakes, you may find it to be extremely dangerous.
Even if you do manage to avoid physical harm, if you delay when it comes to repairing brake problems, you can still significantly increase the costs associated with doing so. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
- Keep your brakes clean by washing them when you wash your car. This will keep dirt and dust off the pads, and also keeps the brakes easier to work on.
- Aim to keep the hydraulic reservoir at its proper level, using the fluid type that Saab recommends. You should never substitute the fluid or mix types.
- When it comes to brake problems, there are no quick fixes or shortcuts. They either function as they are meant to, or they do not. It is important that you know and understand your brake system so that you will know what to do when something goes wrong.
- Keep track of your repair information in a log and keep track of services, receipts and warranties.
- Most noises are related to your Saab's pads, but sensors and rotors should also be replaced when your pads are replaced.
