The brake system on your car is vital to your safety, this type of repair or service is not something you can just put it off until a later date. Knowing the right warning signs and where to go to when you need brake service or repair can save you considerable amount of time and money. If you have a relatively new or late model vehicle, you maybe informed about your brake pad's thickness every time you bring it in for regular service through your local dealership. Although this information is helpful, but it doesn't offer you the whole picture when it comes to the brake system's condition. Today's brake pads will typically last about 40,000 km of driving, but many dealership service advisors will ask you to replace them at much earlier intervals. The reasons behind this practice are quite simple, since brake pads, shoes, and rotors are safety related items; it is hard to argue when it comes to repairs and service. Another reason is the brake system is simple to repair or service, but it pays the technician at least 2 hours of labor. This type of service or repair is the biggest "money maker" for the dealership, that's why it is recommended every time you visit. Think about this scenario from the service technician's point of view. You may have to spend the entire day diagnosing an electrical problem that only pays you 1 hour of labor, or you can change all the brake pads and machine the rotors in 1 hour while it pays you 2, which job would you prefer?
The next time your dealership recommends you to replace brake pads or machine your brake rotors, simply decline and pass on this job to your local trusted small repair shop. The cost difference can be from as little as $200 for the job to as much as $1200, while there is virtually no difference in vehicle's performance. Unknown to many drivers today, there are plenty of warning signs before your brake system fails, here are the top 3 tell tale signs you can look for the next time you drive your car.
1. Does your brake system squeak? - Sound is one of the best indicators for potential brake problems, modern day brake pads are built with warning system in place. When your brake pads are getting low, there will be squeaking, scratching or metal to metal noises when you apply the brake pedal. This sound will get louder as your brake pads are getting lower in thickness, if you are not sure this is happening to your car, simple drive through a tunnel with your windows open and apply your brake pedal. The sound generated from the brake system will echo and amplified by walls from both sides of your vehicle.
2. Does your brake pedal vibrate or shake when applied? - Vibration is another early warning sign for potential brake system failure, since the brake rotors will heat up and cool down many times a day. It can be warped and create uneven braking surface for the brake pads, this will result in vibration when braking. This symptom can be resolved by replacing or machine your rotors to ensure the braking surface are as flat as possible.
3. Are you losing brake fluid or pressure? - When applying your brake pedal, how far does the pedal travel? If your brake pedal is almost to the floor of the vehicle, you maybe leaking brake fluid or pressure from the system. This type of failure is particularly dangerous since your brake system requires considerable amount of pressure for safe operation. If you suspect there maybe a problem, don't delay! Go Faster With Better Brakes
If you're into fast cars and racing, you'll know that there are a lot of things you can tweak on your car to make it perform better; engine, suspension, wheel and tire modifications can all make a big difference, but one key auto part that many people overlook is the brakes. I started autocrossing two years ago in my Subaru WRX. It's a great car to learn on; the turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine packs enough punch to accelerate quickly and the AWD not only helps you get the car up to speed quickly, but it helps you carry the speed through the corners too. But the biggest drawback to a WRX is its brakes. It doesn't have the same 4-piston Brembo brakes that it's bigger brother, the STi, has. So after my first few autocrosses on my stock brakes, I realized they needed some love if they were going to stand up to the abuse I was giving them
Since I was only racing every other weekend, I didn't want to get anything too extreme; I needed a brake setup that was tough enough to not develop brake fade after a few hot laps, but easy enough to live with in my daily commute. So after doing some research on the internet, I found that my stock brake lines at the caliper were actually made of rubber! Rubber brake lines flex, which can add a squishy feeling to the brake pedal. So I decided to add a set of stainless steel brake lines and upgrade my brake fluid to a DOT5 racing fluid while I was at it. I also wanted the brake pads to have more initial bite after I hit the pedal, so I upgraded to a set of Hawk HP brake pads. They seemed like a good compromise to me as they are marketed as a performance street pad and I had read a lot of good reviews on them.
After getting these parts installed, I went for a quick drive and I could immediately tell the difference. The brake pedal was much firmer and the brakes were much more responsive to my pedal inputs. At my next autocross, the improvements in my lap times proved to me that improving your braking system really can make you faster! The better pedal feedback and higher friction brake pads allowed me to brake later, producing a higher average lap speed and slightly faster lap times. Plus I was able to do all three laps without experiencing any brake fade, which meant my brakes still performed well when my tires were hot and sticky. I certainly wasn't the fastest person out there, but I could tell that upgrading the brakes & brake rotors had made a big improvement to the way it performed on the track.

Car does not stop when pressing brake pedal?
What does it mean when the car doesn't brake/stop when pressing the brake pedal? The handbrake works fine but the front breaks wont even lock up if I put all my weight on the brake pedal. The car will just very slowly come to a stop. I tried bleeding all four corners and checking pad wear on the front and everything seems good.
What else should I check/test to find the issue?
The master cylinder has a chamber for the rear and a chamber for the front. It could be that the gasket is worn for the front chamber, allowing pressure to leak past instead of applying pressure to the front pads..
Probe into Chrysler's pedal
DETROIT - US SAFETY regulators have opened an investigation to review a potential sticky accelerator pedal problem in Chrysler Group's 2007 model-year Dodge Caliber cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a document posted on its website that five consumers reported that the accelerator pedal became stuck and would not return to the idle position when released.
