The rules and regulations may vary depending on the person's nationality, immigration status, and country of origin. Always make it a standard practice to get the latest updates from the customs office and other authorized government offices.
A particular concern to Brazil is the risk of possible danger to their crops, flora, and fauna from the Chinese Bug. The Chinese Bug (Anoplophora Glabripennis) is a beetle from China that was found in the United States. It lives inside the hardwood tree and is a threat to its survival. In an effort to protect their flora and fauna, Brazil has imposed rigid restrictions on the entry of wood, such as pallets, wooden crates and any other wooden items.
You should present a fumigation certificate regarding the wooden units. It should be issued by the official government agency of the country of origin. It should certify that the wood has been treated with heat, fumigation or any jointly agreed chemical product not more than 15 days prior to shipment. If the wooden units arrive in Brazil without a certificate, the units will either be burned or treated if possible at the importers' expense. Try to pack your goods in metal or cartons rather than wood. If wood is necessary, make sure the certificates accompany the goods.
When bringing in the household goods and personal effects, Brazil will check for the following documents:
* Your passport with a stamped visa
* Your residence Visa and Brazil I.D. card
* A detailed inventory of the household goods and personal effects in Portuguese. The details should include names, make, model, and serial numbers of all electrical items. The estimated value (in U.S. Dollars) of each item should be indicated. It must be authenticated (legalized) by the Brazilian Consulate. Pets should also be included in the inventory list. Mark the items as used (more than six months old) or "new" (six months or less old). Determining the age of the product may be based on the item's purchase date.
* For returning citizens, a Certificate of Residence issued by the Brazilian Consulate at the country of origin
* A proof of revenue abroad, and a proof of residence abroad if more than one year
* Airline ticket or other carrier if the person is arriving other than by plane
* If you are holding a temporary visa, a work contract and customs bond are required, and a certification that the household goods will be re-exported upon expiration of the contract
* A "Termo de Responsibilidade" (guarantee)
* A Power of Attorney, if necessary. The forms can be provided by the destination agent.
* Letter authorizing the destination agent to clear the shipment

Bug-Proofing Your Home: If there's one, there's one hundred
So, you’ve just moved in to your dream home. Everything’s in its proper place after days of unpacking and you’re just putting the last of the dishes away in the cupboards. You lift the cardboard box off the counter to throw it away and you see…. ANTS!!! (or something equally creepy)
It has been said that there are more than 10 quintillion bugs in the world at any given time, a number generated by some 900 thousand different kinds of insects. Thankfully, North America doesn't have them all. But we still have our fair share.
Here are a few tips to keep them at bay:
* Eliminate their food supply, including water.
* Seal all cracks and gaps in your home’s exterior.
* Add weather stripping to doors, and clear caulk to seal the joint where the doorframe meets the wall.
* Install a sturdy aluminum threshold under your door. Add a door sweep to close the gap even tighter.
* Make sure your basement is clean and dry. Most spiders and beetles love dark, moist hiding places.
* Find the root of the problem, the nest, and eliminate it.
* Keep trees near your house well trimmed. Branches and leaves make a perfect bridge to the inside of your home for bugs.
Lawn pests – another nasty bunch
When you spend a lot of time and money to achieve the perfect lawn, the last thing you want is a gang of bugs feeding on plants and grass.
Most outdoor pests are seasonal, but some, unfortunately, are year-round annoyances. One of the most pervasive lawn invaders in the fall, especially to southern lawns, is the Armyworm. This crawler is the larval form of moths, and its favorite meals are turf grasses. It will chew the grass right down to the ground.
Other common outdoor bugs that can wreak havoc on your pristine lawn include grubs and their adult form, the Japanese beetles, leafhoppers, aphids, mites, mole crickets, sod webworms, and chinchbugs.
If the infestation problem is minor, a visit to your local hardware store will be a good start to do it yourself. However, getting rid of these unwanted guests may require hiring professional pest control companies, if the situation has become severe.
* Caution *
If you live in a home with children or pets, the best move is to call your local pest control professionals.
Natural pest control
A big part of the ‘go green’ movement includes the products used in homes for cleaning and bug-proofing. Many essential oils, readily available at most health food stores can be combined with water and sprayed lightly to rid your home of a number of nasty invaders. They also leave a fresh scent as a bonus. Cinnamon oil compound, for instance, is a potent way to kill mosquito larvae.
