VW's in the 80's were OK. The GTI was great! When the 90's came Germany opened up the Mexico plant and that is when all hell broke loose. The quality issues were insane. The 90's VW cars I would be very suspicious of. It is true, if taken care of, a VW of any year can offer years of FUN transportation. With the 4th generation VW got better quality but more weight. The Jetta for USA is still built in Mexico. I have heard that they are a little better in quality now than when they were in the 80's. I have had a honda civic, and my wife had a nissan maxima. We now both drive VW's. We love 'em both, but there is still a big difference in cars from Mexico and cars from Germany. My golf is from Germany and has not had any problems, 6 years old.. My wife's car a beetle 2003 has its fair share of problems but still less than my old Honda Civic had.
