The car cruise control has been a standard feature in automobiles for some time now. The entire system is guided by a microwave radar and managed by a micro-controller cruise control and is installed in virtually all cars on the road today. It enables the driver to cruise while the car regulates its own speed. The cruise control feature is normally employed if you are driving along a major stretch of highway without any stop lights or intersections.

The system is usually mounted on the steering wheel where it is readily accessible on either side of the horn. The buttons are strategically placed on either side of the steering wheel and speed can be controlled with the touch of the buttons. It is generally recommended to set your cruise control to a speed within the legal speed limit in your area and you don’t have to bother about being a lead foot with the gas pedal. The only thing that you have to worry about is steering your car and preventing it from veering into other lanes. Cruise can also reduce the use of gas and can be very fuel efficient since the car is running on constant speed as you are not applying the pressure on the pedal to maintain that speed and the car is literally doing it for you. Another distinct advantage of using the cruise control is to cautiously avoid breaking speed limit laws, especially nowadays when speed cameras are everywhere. Among the drawbacks are drivers’ tendency to go into a stupor which may consequently lead into an accident. Moreover, if your car does not have Electronic Stability Control, it can skid specially when driving on wet or icy roads when the control is active.

The car cruise control feature is a luxury in most vehicles and comes standard with almost every new vehicle manufactured today. A major factor that led to its development is the fact that it helps reduce the harmful exhaust gas emissions making it a green device. It was therefore received warmly by environmentalists as well as motorists from around the world. Prior to 1995, cruise control was just an option in cars rolled out from the production lines.

My cruise control goes out and my check engine light is on. Could the two be connected?

The other day, I was driving home and had my cruise control set at about 74 mph. After a few miles, my cruise control turned off without my touching anything. The next day, my check engine light came on. Could the two be connected? What could be the problem?

They could be connected. For example, say you have a problem with your throttle body. Your cruise control system controls the throttle body to maintain your speed. If one part of the system has a failure, it will deactivate other related items. That was just an example and those two problems may not even by related. Just going based on past experiences. If you have a 1996 or newer vehicle, take it to a parts store and they will usually check for fault codes there.
