I need an expert! Is the abs speed sensor bad or something else?

Off and on my ABS light has been coming on in my honda 97 crv. When it is on, 2/3 of the time when I come to a stop the car growls and creaks. The pedal feels like the abs has kicked in. It mostly only makes the sound when I am between 0-10 mph. I don't really hear it when I am breaking from 10-x mph. I had a decent amount of stuff in my vehicle because I was on a trip so I'm not sure if weight affects it. I have heard a lot of people talk about the wheel speed sensor. Mostly, they say the light comes on and the ABS does not work when the sensor fails. Does the sensor going bad ever cause the car to activate the ABS when it shouldn't?

First things first- disable the abs yourself or you are going to end up wearing off the pump prematurely. Then fix the problem and re-enable it. You could disable it by pulling off it's fuse. Disabling the abs will not affect the brakes, you won't have abs functionality that's all.
Remember that the abs pump is not a long lasting device, it is meant to give you 1 or more seconds of pumping at times of need. Unlike other devices like headlights, etc..which work for several hundred hours before tanking, the total life of the pump is around several minutes, just like your car's starter motor.

The problem may be your sensor or the wire that goes to the ecu from the sensor or the ecu itself.
This is how I diagnosed my abs warning light:

Plug in a code scanner ( NOT the conventional odb/odb2 scanner, you need a specialized scanner with odb/odb2 + abs/airbag read capability) I got my error code read out for $30 at a local shop and realized that the right rear sensor was bad.

So I went home and jacked up the left rear wheel, connected my multimeter and checked the resistance of the sensor as the wheel was spun by my hand.
I observed the needle on the multimeter as the wheel spun.
Then I did the same thing to the bad side- the needle moved somewhat similarly- so the sensor was ok..

Then I checked the resistance of the cable going from the sensor to the ecu, it looked like the resistance of the right rear cable was infinity whereas the left rear had an arbitary value. So I crawled further under the car and discovered a loose socket connection where the cable met the base of the car, I guess it was caused by debris on the road. Tightened it, now it's a-ok.

Try this technique to figure out your issue.
