Small horizontal scratch in cylinder. What will happen?

The scratch is probably a few 1000's of an inch deep and 3/4 inch long. It is right in the middle of TDC and BDC It would not hone out. I am going to put it back together just to see what happens before I pay $1500 for a new engine. What should I expect? Smoke? Loss of compression? No side effects? This is a V8 truck BTW.
I am adding a new piston and rings because the old one was destroyed.
I don't feel like pulling every piston and having it bored out. If this doesn't work, I'll just swap the whole long block and sell this one to someone who wants to do all that trouble. I'm just wondering what to expect from my in-car overhaul.

In a way, everything you described is just what you'll notice. You will see some smoke upon acceleration, loss of compression from that cylinder, some oil loss and not much more than just that. The real question is, why don't you fix it right now that you have everything apart? If the motor hasn't been bored in the past, you could fix it all now.
