If your dad is like most good fathers, he's the first to get in his truck and hitch the trailer to help you do anything you need. Whether it's moving or letting you use the trailer in a parade, he's glad to do it because he's a great dad. So how can you show your appreciation?
You can start by buying him a brand new trailer tire and wheel for that one tire that looks a little low. They're actually pretty affordable, so this gift will be easy. You can visit a dealer in person or you can buy online. You'd be surprised at how affordable trailer tires and rims can be online versus at a brick and mortar store. Here are some tips to consider:
- For starters, make sure you know the size of trailer tire and wheel you'll need. Standard sizes are 12 and 13 inch, 14 and 15 inch, 8 and 10 inches, and 16 inch.
- Then figure out what metal or finish the existing trailer tires and rims are. They could be aluminum, chrome, galvanized metal, and a few others.
- Then decide if you want to buy the tire wheel assembly or a tire by itself. A tire by itself maybe slightly cheaper, but it will not look like a finished product.
These tips should get you started. Once you've made your purchase and the trailer tire and wheel have arrived, go all out and install it yourself. Put a bow on the new tire and surprise dad on Christmas morning.
John Snapperon is self taught mechanic, often found discussing auto parts including trailer tire and wheels with local mechanics and shop owners. Everything he learned, he learned on the fly from trial and error. When he's not learning about car and trailer parts, he spends his time at the local track, watching people race their suped up cars.
Easy steps to rebuild a drum brake
Brakes are a very important part of your vehicle. If gone wrong, it can wreck havoc for your car. Many of the cars use drum brakes on the rear. Drum brakes have the brake pads located inside a drum , which is again located on the wheel hub. This wheel hub presses out against the inside of the drum as you engage the brakes. If you want to rebuild drum brakes, it is only a matter of a few hours.
Let us take a look at how to rebuild drum brakes:
Stationing the car: You must park the car in second gear on a flat ground and ensure that the emergency brake is on.
Lug nuts: You need to loosen the lug nuts that are placed on the rear tires.
Jacking up: You must jack up the rear of the car and place jack stand underneath the external frame. After having done that, slowly lower the frame onto the jack stands. If you are not sure then you may check with the car manuals to see where exactly to place the jack and the jack stand.
Remove lug nuts: You had loosened the lug nuts earlier, now you need to remove them from the rear wheels and detach the tyres from the car.
Remove drum brake: Now you need to detach the drum brakes from the wheel hub. You may have to pull back the brake shoes a little to enable the drum brakes to slide off. To pull back the brake shoes, you must take out the rubber plug from behind the brake. Now, with the help of a flathead screw driver loosen the socket within the drum. You may find an upoward motion easy. Continue with the motion until the drum is taken out.
Cleaning: Using a brake wash, clean the drum brakes. Make sure you use precautions like gloves as well as an eye wear to avoid any direct contact with the drum. This caution must be maintained as the drum may contain asbestos, which is carcinogenic.
Disconnect other parts: The pins placed on the top portion of the brakes and the shoe retracting spring must be detached from each other. Once this is done, repeat the same process for the springs at the bottom. Use a brake removal tool designed to remove brake springs.
Metal Tab: You must find the auto-adjuster tab which is actually a tiny metal tab located at the base of the wheel hub. Use a pair of pliers to lift it. Now, with the help of a screwdriver detach the auto-adjuster cable.
Secondary brake removal: Detach the secondary braking shoe from the parking brake cable by raising the primary braking shoe.
More cleaning: You must use a brake wash to clean the wheel hub. Take care of the same safety measures as earlier.
Grease aplication: Pour brake grease at the point where the brake shoes make contact with the wheel hub.
Brake pads: Position the brake pads in the same place as the old pads.
Reassembling: Reverse the process that you used to remove the drum brake and this will automatically reassemble it.
Put tyres back: Tighten the tyres back to the wheel hubs with lug nuts. Don't overuse force to tighten. Tighten only till you feel the resistence.
Jack up the car: The final step is to jack up the car and slowly remove the jack stands. Now lower the car to the ground making the lug nuts firm.

How easy is it to change the pads on a rear drum brake in a 1995 BMW E36 Compact?
My passenger side rear drum brake has recently started grinding which I assume is it telling me the pads are worn. I am considering attempting to change the pads myself and wanted to know the complexity of the task, before I continue or pay a mechanic (over the odds) for the work.
I am fairly confident at most smaller DIY jobs.
Thanks
Absolutely simple & straightforward job. Get yourself a Haynes manual - well worth it.
And drums have shoes; discs have pads.

The driver side window starts acting up. Gets stuck half way and just keeps going up and down in that area. Doesn't happen always, but on rare occasions like when the car is washed and the window rubber is a bit sticky. Honda ppl couldn't fix it till now.
