Learning shapes is a fundamental skill toddlers and preschool children learn early in life. Shapes are all around us in everyday items like the television, drinking glasses and even windows in our houses. But learning to recognize the many different shapes is not always easy for toddlers.

 

As parents, grandparents and daycare providers, we can help kids learn shapes while having lots of fun. Kids of all ages love to create and make things with their own hands and these kids craft ideas are a perfect way to incorporate some fun and lots of learning.

 

Shapes Crafts for Kids

 

When learning shapes, kids generally start with the basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles, etc. So think of anything that has these basic shapes and then turn it into a kids craft idea. For instance, using simple craft supplies like construction paper, scissors and glue you can make many different shapes crafts.

 

Here are some quick ideas for shapes crafts that you can do with your kids.

 

A House of Shapes

 

Cut out basic house shapes with different colored construction paper. Use a square or rectangle for the house, a triangle for the roof and several circles, ovals, smaller squares and rectangles for the parts of the house.

 

Then have the kids glue the house together on a piece of paper. They can use ovals, circles or whatever shape for the windows. Have them name the shapes as they glue their house together.

 

Animal Shapes Crafts

 

Kids can create many animals, insects and fish using some of the basic shapes. For instance, create a cute angel fish using triangle shapes to form the body, tail and fins. Penguins are all the rage right now and your kids can put one together with a few oval shapes and a circle for the head. Use black and white construction paper or craft foam and you can have a cute penguin in no time. Glue them to a popsicle stick and you have an instant puppet.

 

Inexpensive Crafts to Learn Shapes

 

Kids craft ideas do not have to be expensive or even use your typical craft supplies. Instead recycle some of your household items to make many different shaped crafts. Reuse an empty coffee can to make a simple drum. The circle shape of the can is perfect for creating a drum set. Just cover the can with construction paper, decorate and put the lid back on. Then use some wooden dowels or BBQ skewers and some wooden beads to create your drum sticks. If you don't have wooden beads you can even use marshmallows. Just stick the marshmallow on the end of the stick. You can even paint them which will help seal the gooey treat. Keep in mind, these drumsticks are not for eating. 

 

Use paper plates to create a king or queen's crown. Cut out several triangles from the middle of the plate and then decorate with glitter glue, beads and ribbon and they have a king or queen's crown they can wear.

 

Get out the old newspapers and create a Paper Mache craft. Paper Mache is a great way to create many different shaped crafts. You can create an oval shaped Easter egg by blowing up a balloon (into an oval shape) and then just start laying your Paper Mache together. Once everything is dried, just decorate and you have a finished craft. 

 

Shapes Activities

 

Learning shapes with kids crafts are a great way to get the children involved and having fun while they learn. You can also add many shapes activities for kids to help reinforce their learning.  Create several flash cards with different shapes and have them play "concentration" or matching the shapes with the cards.

 

You can even reinvent those old favorite childhood games like "red light, green light". Instead of the child calling out red light, green light, give them two shapes to call out and one shape would mean go and the other would mean stop. Another kid's activity idea for learning shapes is to place different objects around the house. Then ask your child to find all square shaped objects, and then circle shapes, etc.

 

Another great way to help with their learning is with fun songs or lyrics. Studies show that by adding a catchy tune or lyrics children are able to retain the information better. Rather you use kids craft ideas, activities, a catchy song or a combination of all of these, you and your kids will have fun while they learn their shapes.

The Many Sounds Of The Drum

There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of different kinds of drums existing in the world today. Rather like a Dr. Seuss book, there are tall ones, short ones, fat ones, skinny ones, loud ones, soft ones, light ones, heavy ones...you name it, the world of drums has it. But perhaps you find certain kind of drum music more moving than others. Perhaps you prefer the crisp sound of the snare; or maybe the resounding boom of the odaiko speaks to you; or perhaps the upbeat resonance of the bongos suits your taste. If you find yourself drawn to drums that sound a certain way, then it can be useful to know what factors of drum construction affect the instruments' sound.

Several factors combine to determine a drum's sound: the shell's material and construction, the drumhead's (or drumheads') material and the tension of said drumheads. The first of these factors, the material and construction of the drumhead, actually has the least affect on the drum's sound. However, it should certainly not be discounted. Because the vibrations of the drumhead resonate within the shell of the drum, the shell can be used to increase the volume and manipulate the type of sound produced. The larger the diameter of the shell, the lower the pitch of the drum will be. Anyone who has ever played timpani or marching band bass drums will attest to this. The type of wood used can have a significant affect as well. Birch, for example, generates a bright, crisp and clean sound, whereas maple shells have a warm, wholesome sound. So be sure to take both the size and material of any drum into account.

The tension of the drumhead, or drumheads, is the second biggest factor affecting the sound produced by a drum. This tension is created along the drum hoop, which runs along the rim of the drum shell where it connects to the drumhead. The tension of the drumhead is controlled with bolts, which are adjustable. When these bolts are tightened, the tension of the drumhead is increased, which reduces the amplitude of the sound while increasing its frequency. This, in turn, makes the pitch higher and the volume lower. Although these bolts are, as mentioned, adjustable, this is only true within a certain range on any given drum.

Finally, the drumhead has the greatest effect on how a drum sounds. Each type of drumhead serves its own musical purpose and has its own unique sound. To give a few examples, thicker drumheads create lower sounds and can be very loud, while thinner ones are pitched higher and have less volume. Drumheads with a white plastic coating on them muffle the overtones of the drumhead slightly, producing a less diverse pitch. Drumheads made from animal skin have a more "traditional" sound, essential to some artists' purposes, while those made of plastic or Kevlar sound more "modern" (if it is possible for a drum to sound modern). And any combination of these characteristics will produce a different sound from any other combination. Needless to say, that makes for a lot of potential sounds.

Not surprisingly, different drum sounds have different uses in music. For example, a jazz drummer may want drums that sound crisp, clean and a little on the soft side, whereas a rock and roll drummer may prefer drums that sound loud and deep. Hence the jazz drummer may select drums with smaller maple shells and thin drumheads, while a rock drummer may go for those with larger birch shells and thick drumheads.

Tips on recording drums?

I have a very basic drumset. Hi hat, snare, bass, crash and three toms.

I am in a band so we need to record, of course.
We are not out of high school so we are on a strict budget.

What do you think of the following combination?

CAD CM217 Condenser Mic for overheads and snare.
SHS OMD-2 Bass Mic for the bass drum.

Also, please include any tips for recording the drums and any pre-amps or cords I may need.

those should work fine. you'll probably want at least 2 overhead mics and the kick mic. you can get away with just those 3. ive used regular vocal mics before to record the drums. id place one right at the snare, and another between my 2 toms and they picked up surprisingly well. really, as long as you have a line mixer, you can get away with fewer/cheaper mics.
