Ecu Module

We left Sydney about 7am for the 1hr trip down the M5 to the Southern Highlands. The brand new Hino Ranger Pro 10 (GH1J) we were in moved along the highway smoothly until we hit 'Cutaway' hill just south of Mittagong. We noted that in sixth gear we had dropped from 90kmph back to 62kmph by the time we were about three quarters of the way up. We were heading for Berrima Diesel Service to have a DPChip fitted to the Ranger and anticipated a good improvement from what we had been told about this device. Before long we were pulling into the driveway and being greeted by Andrew who was going to fit the device for us today.

The DPChip is a simple plug in device for EFI diesel vehicles which can improve power and torque by altering the engine management parameters to maximise efficiency. All engines come out of the factory set quite conservatively for a variety of reasons. A good example of this is evident in the Ranger Pro series with a variety of outputs from the same engine. The DPChip plugs in after the vehicle's ECU (on the Ranger it required a small harness and a few wires connecting in so the DPChip could then plug in) and intercepts the signals being sent to the engine. It then modifies and enhances these signals, within safe tolerances, and sends them on their way to the engine, with power and torque being greatly improved. An added benefit is often a fuel saving with improved economy as gear changes become smoother and less often required. Andrew had the DPChip fitted up in about 35mins and we were ready for a test drive to fine tune it to the Ranger. A simple adjuster on the side of the module was used for adjustment. (Note: There is also facility for laptop adjustment in some models.)

Instantly we could notice the benefits as the truck pulled up the hill out of Berrima after rolling on at 1200 revs in 6th (Top)gear. There was definitely more power available and it felt a much smoother ride. The real test would be on Cutaway hill which we had used as a benchmark on the way in. After a few tweaks on the DPChip, Andrew was happy with the settings. We hit the hill at 90kmph in sixth gear again and the difference was substantial. By the same point at which we had to change down before (about ¾ the way up doing 62kmph) we were now still doing a comfortable 78kmph in top gear!

The Ranger definitely had more get up and go and was a real pleasure to drive on the run back to Sydney. Andrew was happy to tell us that we will probably get better consumption too and that any concerns we had of tweaking the engine were put to rest as he explained that the original engine management safety systems are left intact and operational with the DPChip ensuring safety and longevity of the engine.

How Diesel Tuning Devices Work

Diesel Tuning Modules are specifically designed and tested to achieve enhanced performance by modifying the electronic diesel fuel injection parameter mappings. Through careful interaction of these parameter values and characteristics optimum performance of your engine be achieved. One of the reasons this optimisation is required is manufacturing variances and varying fuel qualities across the country, across the world. Vehicle manufacturers wish to produce one version of a vehicle for worldwide distribution. This means they must choose the lowest common denominators, and for go some performance gains.

The turbo boost pressure is not altered by our diesel performance modules, only dynamic parameter changes are made in real time to the electronic diesel fuel injection system, within the manufacturers specification. A number of engine parameters are modified, depending on the specific engine and its operating condition. These include a number of aspects, including fuel injection timing and volume., depending on the specific engine.

Increases in boost can cause ECU error codes if not managed carefully. Our diesel performance tuning modules permit the original ECU to handle all of its error and sanity checks. Unlike some other systems on the market, our modules has been tested in real world conditions from the heat of the deserts to the cold climates of the alpine regions, in day to day city driving to the demanding slogging off road outback usage. They are truly tested Australian tough!

Many of the DPChip Diesel Performance Tuning Modules also have adjustable tuning via a moveable connection. The Diesel Performance Tuning Module can also be tuned using a MS Windows computer (typically a laptop). This is a form of tune that can do considerably more than the manual adjustment. As well as overall power being able to be increased, the power can be moved further down or up the range and the power delivered can be varied to be smooth or aggressive.

Another great advantage of this is that if you decide to enhance your vehicle further, through maybe larger intercoolers, larger exhausts etc. you can easily adjust the Diesel Tuning Module to match the new modification so the full potential can be reached. Fixed map boxes and chips this is not possible and a new chip or box would be required - costing more money.

Power and torque can be felt immediately after the Diesel Performance Tuning Module is fitted. The throttle response is improved and particularly low and mid range torque is vastly improved, making the overall performance of the vehicle completely different. This is particularly valuable when precise throttle response is required in off road conditions. Not only that, but the improved power and torque mean that you can approach obstacles in a controlled manner, not relying on brute momentum to carry you through or over them.

When carrying loads and/or towing the extra power is also great advantage. The overall drive becomes more pleasurable and the engine in most instances actually runs smoother. As an example, one of our test cars was able to slash more than 9 seconds from a typical highway overtaking manoeuvre using our DPChip Performance Exhaust system and Diesel Performance Tuning Module. About the Author

Is there any drawback to installing fuel saving and HP increasing modules or chips in your car?

I am looking into purchasing a module to tune my vehicle's ECU to allow the engine to run at stoichiometric levels which maximizes performance and improves fuel economy simultaneously. Sounds too good. Is there some disadvantage of buying this that I'm not aware of?

Yes! The original chip will use a set of algorithms to determine the best fuelling, injector timing for the vehicle in any situation based on input from various sensors. The modified chip will change these algorithms to a range that is different (probably less acceptable) than the set used in the original chip. These will be biased towards performance at the expense of what is acceptable to various components eg exhaust (overfuelling may get you better performance but will damage your catalyst).
On the other hand to run economical the chip may deliberately make the car run lean which may be good for fuel economy but will raise the temperatures of your cylinders and exhaust to high temperatures possibly causing damage and at least accelerating wear of components.
