The Relatively Short-Lived Ford Probe
A near-decade of the Ford Probe, which was a car that proved quite interesting when it was first rolled out by the Blue Oval folks back in 1988 for the 1989 model year, seemed to have gone by in the blink of an eye back then. Put forth as the replacement for the Ford EXP two-seater, it was built off the well-liked Mazda G platform, and made in front-wheel-drive only. It was also supposed to replace the Mustang, though that never happened.
The Ford Probe was also intended as a kind of fighter against an anticipated rise in oil prices, with the aim of the car's designers to deliver a vehicle that boasted excellent performance in both 4 and 6 cylinder trim while also helping company average fuel economy goals. It largely delivered on both fronts, though sales upon its introduction in 1988 as a 1989 model never did live up to expectations.
The Probe's design was always sleek and modern over the two generations. Initially wedge-shaped and futuristic in design, the car attracted many but also spooked a few who weren't used to a vehicle that resembled the Probe in design. The car shared much of its mechanical underpinnings with its sister Mazda 626, both of which rolled off the same assembly lines at the company's Flat Rock, Michigan plant, which it and Mazda had jointly developed.
Sales of the car, however, even after its redesign in 1993 led to it winning Car of the Year awards from a couple of different automotive magazines, were perennially disappointing and the plug was finally pulled at the end of the 1997 model run.
Engine offering were also a point of pride for the Probe, with even the 2. 2 liter powerplant managing to deliver a decent 110 ponies at a push of the gas pedal. The turbocharged version of the same engine sent 148 horses of power scampering down the road, and the original V6 almost matched the high-performance mill's output. The two generations of Ford Probe, in fact, never had a bad engine between them.
Even though Ford back in those days had a seeming reluctance to move quickly in a quickly-evolving marketplace, the Probe demonstrated what the company could do when it felt compelled to throw a strong import fighting vehicle into the fray. The vehicle came stocked with advanced technological features for the day -- especially during the life of the first generation -- and was never dull or uninteresting.
The years since the model's discontinuation have proven the durability of the second generation's chassis and underpinnings, and there are still a number of outstanding examples of the hot-rod version of the Probe (the GT, which boasted a normally aspirated V6 that put out 164 robust horses), which came kitted out in front-wheel drive and a vigorous performance stance.

Should Ford bring back the EXP?
With the focus of the Auto Show being alternative fuel and small engine vehicles, do you thin that Ford should revive the EXP and cater to their younger audiences, such as recent college graduates?
YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUK! LOL
EXP - "Erika Project Personal"
I miss the 80's too, but not enough to bring that thing back. It was about that time the Japanese were gaining traction in the marketplace, and they haven't looked back since!
Didn't it sit in the Escort frame?
I hope if they did, they would style it and boost the HP!
As I remember it had two model phases:
1982-1985
198'sh-1988'sh
Now, if they styled it more like a roadster, that would be interesting. And I don't mean a "mini Thunderbird"!
If you ask me, Ford should consider certain models they typically build overseas (build them here domestically, our dollar is not worth much these days).
