Everyone is familiar with the Great Chicago Fire to some degree or another. We've all heard it was large, devastating, and that a cow started it by innocently kicking over a lantern. It may come as a disappointment to those who like me retained that lovely elementary school version, to hear that the cow was a complete fabrication. Reporter Michael Ahern for the Chicago Republican admitted in 1893 that he made it up just to make his story more interesting.

I'm pretty scared for public education, knowing that the story persisted for over a century even after being completely retracted by its original author. Apparently teachers can't resist a story that features an innocent animal. Though it has stood the test of time as the kid-friendly explanation for the terrifying two-day conflagration, the cow story actually has some less than friendly origins.

The whole story is that the woman who owned the cow was an Irish immigrant named Catherine O'Leary. This supposed woman's heritage meshed perfectly with the majority of the City's political leanings. Because Catherine O'Leary was female, Irish, Catholic, and an immigrant, she became a perfect storm of blame-worthiness. The story was so appealing to the citizenry that it began circulating the streets of Chicago before the blaze was even put out.

I find it somewhat enjoyable that the story teachers deemed to be fit for virgin ears was also the story fit for an angry, soot-stained and bigoted populace. If this bit of info were to circulate a bit, I wager that some of the other stories would make their way into the new editions of K-5 textbooks.

A fuller explanation of the fire, which was endorsed in 1997 by Chicago's City Council, was that the man that was since known as the first person to sound the alarm, Daniel "Pegleg" Sullivan, was the culprit. He and his accomplice Dennis Regan were neighbors of the O'Learys and both claimed to see the O'Learys' barn on fire before the O'Learys did. The vantage point from where they claimed to first witness the fire was later determined to be impossible.

It is believed that the two men started the blaze while attempted to steal milk from their cow. Another story claims that a man named Louis M. Cohn started the fire during a game of craps. He supposedly admitted to it in his will, which is now lost.

Still others believe that the fire was started by a meteor shower, namely Biela's comet, rained down pieces that started fires on that day. An engineer and physicist named Robert Wood first put forth this theory in 2004 at an aerospace conference. As opposed to out and out hearsay, Wood compiled evidence from accounts that had less finger-pointing in them, specifically those that mentioned seeing spontaneous ignitions, little to no smoke, and 'balls of fire' in the sky, all of which indicate a broken up comet and the methane that they bring into the atmosphere.

Balls of fire in the sky may be a bit sensational, but not as ridiculous as a long-told story that has long been known false.

where is the computer or brain box located in a 1990 lincoln towncar? and would it fit in a 1991 ford econolin

my vans computer went out and i have a junk lincoln. would the computer fit? its a 1990 towncar going into a 1991 ford econoline.in the towncar, i looked under the dash (passenger side) and couldnt find it there. where is it located?

It will not work, the programming will be different for the Town Car. You would need to find a PCM from another Econoline.
