Hi there,

Tomorrow I am having my front brake pads replaced on my 2007 Honda Fit. The dealer quoted me $180 total for pads and labor.

It sounds like I might also need new rotors.

How much is a resonable total fee, parts and labor, for this job.

Check around--check around-- check around!!!! I am a mechanic by trade,but did not want to do my own brakes,(just getting lazy and it was getting cold and didn't have tools and jack handy. I was stranded in wichita (originally from Ia.) I went to all kinds of places getting quotes just to replace the pads. I got quotes around $1000 from more than 4 places. They all kept telling me I either needed the rotors replaced (which was a lie) or they HAD to replace them because it was a franchise like tires plus or firestone. I understood that part if they HAD to. So I bought my own pads at a parts store (I am thinking around $60) for both front and back. Then looked for a small out of the way mechanic to put them on.I talked to him for awhile and was very comfortable with the way he talked on the phone and made an appointment. He installed the pads, we both agreed it didn't need rotors and I paid like $100 and I was on my way. It was way cheaper than $1000 and I am very happy with them. Rotors will need replaced if the pads have gotten into the rotors and you have been hearing a grinding noise.
Call the parts store, see what they cost, find out what the labor rate is and how long it will take. Most brake jobs take app.1/2 hr just for pads per wheel. Keep in mind, if you purchase the pads yourself, you will need to find a mechanic who will just put them on. Some won't put the part on if the customer brings it in because they can't make money on the resale of the part. Ya need to stay away from those places anyway!!!!!!
