Imagine if your dog were a real person, how grateful it would feel to know you personally took the time, effort and weekend sacrifice to build a home it could call its own! Then again, that cheerful bark and the playful expression on its face (with its tongue sticking out), could just be another way of saying thanks to you.

If you are like me, at first I thought building a doghouse was fairly easy. Our family is a proud owner of Cadbury, a chocolate labrador retriever.

I was thinking, "Hey, this would be a piece of cake - it's just putting pieces of wood together, coming up with a decent structure for its roofing, making sure the whole thing fits (with nails, screws, and the use of super glue maybe?) and that Cadbury is protected from any harsh weather and at the same time, remains comfortable."

It was a good thing I had a friend who also owns a labrador (yellow) and I thought could read my mind, since I was more of the practical type, and suggested that I go back to the 'ol drawing board.

Or better yet, invest in a good set of doghouse plans.

Building a doghouse is admittedly very easy to do. But without a good set of blueprints to guide you along the way, you might forget some important details that would leave pets like Cadbury, whining and complaining in the end.

I never thought that there are different types of lumber that work best for building a structure for my canine buddy. Add to that the fact that ventilation is extremely important and how you construct the roof, along with the proper choice of materials can spell a big difference to the health and well-being of your dog.

The proper choice of paint is another issue. And obviously coming up with a good enough space inside for your pet to have breathing room is also important and it would not be possible if I drew up the designs by myself.

Some doghouse plans, aside from having step by step instructions and a list of all the materials and hardware needed, also have pre-cut wood included.

Thanks to my friend's advice, I was able to build a doghouse for Cadbury, save lots of time and money and have a finished project that I can be proud of.
