If you found this article, that probably means you're in search of a portable car heater for your vehicle. Which probably means your car heater isn't working. (I know, I'm awfully smart, aren't I?!)
I got excited about showing others some of the portable car heater solutions that are out there after owning an ancient Hyundai that was leaking so much antifreeze that the mechanic just bypassed the heater core. For one whole winter I had a car that was basically not drivable during the winter weather. If I'd known then that there were inexpensive portable car heater solutions out there, I would have been able to keep my part-time job teaching adult literacy. But as it was, I gave up the low-paying job that I loved because I just didn't have the money right then to get the heater repaired.
So, given my history, you can probably imagine how I felt as I strolled through the forums the other day to see what advice is being offered to the poor Joe (or Josephine) who calls for help when a portable car heater solution is needed fast.
Typical forum post: "Car heater not working. Can anyone help, PLEASE? (And don't tell me to get the heater core fixed. I got an estimate, and I just don't have the $500 the mechanic will charge me.)"
Typical forum response: "You really just need to get the heater core fixed, buddy. If your job is so important to you, then just shell out that $500 and take care of the problem."
Grrrrrrr.
I'm sorry, but this kind of response is just totally NOT helpful. If that poor soul had the money, then that is exactly what he or she would do. And guess what, smarty-pants? They already told you they DON'T HAVE IT. So how's about snapping out of your perfect little world and answering the question?
Having experienced the same problem myself (and having now researched the various solutions), here is how I would answer it.
Car heater not working? So sorry to hear it--let's get you fixed up quickly. Here's a 3-prong solution for you.
A. Emergency solution to get you (shivering and with teeth chattering) to work: Get a plug-in cigarette lighter portable car heater for $13. The ride will still be miserable (sorry, Sweetheart)--but your windows will be defrosted and you won't get into an accident or pulled over by a police officer. So the glass is really half-full, right?
B. Take care of the kids. Get a 3-way adapter (assuming you've got two little cuties to transport in the back seat). In one of the sockets goes your $13 portable car heater. In the other two sockets go your heated car seat covers, for $17 apiece. Total purchase? Under $50! (I highly recommend Amazon Prime, by the way. You'll get free shipping and second-day delivery with every purchase.) Note: It's mighty important to get the kind of adapter that shows you some indication of how your battery charge is doing. You don't want to find that your plug-ins have totally drained your battery! It's also a good idea to remove the adapter from the socket each time you get out of the car--just to make sure that the juice isn't flowing out in a slow drain when the car is just sitting in your driveway.
C. If you plan to replace the car soon (or get that heater fixed), then don't invest any more than that in devices for the car itself. Consider (if you have a garage) saving for an infrared electric garage heater for under $200. Even when you do replace or fix the vehicle, you will appreciate that little comfort. It'll get you more heat and spread it around better. You can also use it to heat a patio or deck if you choose. It's a marvelous device--and portable so long as you don't get a wall-mounted model. So no, you do NOT have to spend that $500 to get the car's heater fixed. At least, not this moment.
You may end up needing to do that by the time your next vehicle inspection date rolls around. But don't go running up your credit card bill--try to save up and take care of that repair when you've got the money.
In the meantime, explore the various portable car heater alternatives available to you. Sure, none of these is a perfect solution. And, more than likely, none of these will get you through your next car inspection. But isn't it nice to know you have options besides freezing in your car all winter? Or not being able to get yourself to work whenever there is snow or freezing rain? Or bundling your children up in eight layers of fleece just to go to day care?
I've got several reviews and recommendations for the best portable car heater options on my product review blog. Just go to http://portable-car-heater.com for more advice. (And rest assured, I never recommend to any of my readers that "you just get the heater fixed"!)
Weddings for Less Than $100 for Holiday Sale
It's not every day that you walk past the Main Street Flea Market and bump into a bride sporting a wedding dress. But this was Valentine's Day, so anything goes. And that includes the Hawaiian shirt worn by the groom and the tiny county clerk's room in Martinez where Jamie Harrison and Larry Herrington got married Wednesday morning. All it takes to enter this converted conference room of love is $94 and a man and woman ready for a life of eternal bliss. And 27 couples did just that on Valentine's Day, the busiest time of the year for the Contra Costa County clerks who process passport applications one minute and perform marriage ceremonies the next. "You don't walk down the aisle here," said Assistant County Recorder Barbara Chambers, who has 5,000 ceremonies under her robe and well dealing in designer wedding dresses, wedding dress shops, cheap wedding dresses etc "you walk down the hallway by the file folders." In fact, to get from the lobby to the ceremony room, you walk by a couple desks, up a ramp, past the shelves of fictitious business files, hang a right at the robe rack and you're at the destination for five minutes of matrimony. At the Harrison-Herrington wedding, eight relatives squeezed into the room, decorated with two burning candles, a shiny red heart hanging on the white wall and a bouquet of flowers in front of the "altar," err, conference table. When they closed the door, there was no room for the bride's father to sit down. "I'm standing in front of the door so no one escapes," he said. After a quick set of vows and an exchange of rings, Herrington kissed his bride and posed for photos. He was excited to have the ceremony over -- and to lock in Feb. 14 as their anniversary. "I've got a bad memory when it comes to dates," said Herrington, a 42-year-old carpenter. "I can't mess this up." And when it was all over, they got a steal of a deal -- far less than the $25,000 average bill racked up for American weddings. After the $64 marriage license, all it costs for a civil ceremony is $30 - - and they even throw in a heart-imprinted commemorative certificate and a baggy of Hershey's Kisses for free! Cost runs slightly more for a wedding at the Alameda County clerk's office, where the ceremony-and-license package deal goes for $134. Twenty-two couples exchanged vows there on Wednesday. "It's the day couples are supposed to be in love," 20-year-old bride Kayleen Buaphan said at the Oakland office. In Martinez, brides and grooms lined up for ceremonies every 15 minutes. Abbe Sultan and Sanaz Bahrami walked past same-sex marriage advocates and opponents holding signs to get inside the clerk's office. For the young Antioch couple, getting married on Valentine's Day was yet another holiday to add to their romantic milestones. Their first date happened on Flag Day last year, a night of dinner theater at Teatro ZinZanni in San Francisco. And they got engaged near the Half Dome trailhead on Christmas. Sultan's explanation for the Valentine's Day anniversary was common among men. "Hey, I get a two-for-one, right?" said Sultan, an insurance business owner who donned a tan three-piece suit. "I only have to buy roses on one day. No; I used to hate Valentine's Day, but I wanted to switch it around." It's the first of three weddings for them. The couple is saving up for a traditional church ceremony next year and then yet another wedding -- this one in Iran for Bahrami's relatives to attend. Bahrami met her husband-to-be when she needed to insure her 2004 Honda Accord. He set her up with a policy and made sure he provided top-notch customer service, calling just about every day to see if she received paperwork. And that was all over the phone. "She sounded sweet and then months later I saw her picture on MySpace and I looked up and said, 'Thank you,'" he recalled. "She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen."

1995 Honda Passport Squeaking in Front End?
I have a 1995 Honda Passport I got recent and it has some squeaking that comes from the front end. It sounds like bushings or something. Anyone have any ideas? The steering also loose and not very responsive.
Forgot to add that it only happens over bumps. Thats why I thought it was bushings.
First off try checking the power steering fluid's level and the belt , plus the pulley.
