Dodge Ram MI Automaker Chrysler Announces 76,000 Truck Recall

Dodge Ram MI readers may want to know about the voluntary recall being conducted by Chrysler for 76, 122 Dodge Ram vehicles. The vehicles affected are 2010-2011 Dodge Ram trucks that were manufactured between March 2009 and October 2010. Some of these trucks that are equipped with a diesel engine and a hydroboost brake system may have a power steering cap that has excessive vent pressure levels. This may cause the brake pedals to return slowly, and this could increase the risk of a collision.

Earlier this year there had been problems with the hydroboost brake system in Dodge Rams with a diesel engine. It was determined that pressure was building within these systems due to the brake pedal, and by removing the power steering cap, the problem stopped occurring. The first course of action was to redesign the power steering cap to correct this issue; this began in October 2010.

Between January and October of this year, Chrysler received 175 warranty claims about this specific problem. With further investigation, it was decided the brake pedal was not the root cause; the elevated power steering system pressures were the actual source.

In November, Dodge Ram MI automaker Chrysler received this information, which ultimately was the deciding factor to complete a recall of older vehicles that did not receive the redesigned power steering cap. The actual percentage expected to have this defect is 1 percent of the vehicles. At this point, Chrysler does not know of any accidents, injuries or property damage that have been caused due to this possible flaw.

Starting in February 2011, Dodge Ram MI owners and all others will receive notifications about this problem. Owners may contact Chrysler directly at 800-853-1403 or they may call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
