Have you seen those commercials on television today where they show new motor vehicles slamming into a solid wall with the crash dummies in the car? If so, you should be comforted to know that every single car sold in the United States must pass a variety of different safety tests and crash safety tests before it is added to the market. These tests are run by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This agency is dedicated to reducing the number of injuries and deaths that occur on the nation's roadways each year by testing the cars that are sold within the country.
The number of car crashes in this country is declining each year as well as the number of fatalities that occur as a result of these crashes and the reason for this is the use of crash test dummies during crash testing. The crash test dummies are equipped with three main pieces of equipment that include accelerometers, load sensors, and motion sensors that help the crash test staff determine whether or not a vehicle can be deemed safe. The dummies come in all shapes and sizes to represent different body sizes of males and females. They also represent children as well, in car seats or in regular seats.
The top safety picks for the calendar year 2009 as rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are separated into the groups of large cars, midsize cars, midsize convertibles, small cars, minivans, minicars, large SUVs, midsize SUVs, small SUVs, large pickups and small pickups. The top safety picks for 2009 for large cars are the Acura RL, the Audi A6, the Cadillac CTS, the Ford Taurus, the Lincoln MKS, the Mercury Sable, the Toyota Avalon and the Volvo S80. The top safety picks for the calendar year 2009 for small midsize cars are the Acura TL, the Acura TSX, the Audi A3, the Audi A4, the BMW 3 Series, the Ford Fusion, the Honda Accord, the Mercedes S Class, the Mercury Milan, the Saab 9-3, the Subaru Legacy, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Volkswagen Passat.
The award winners for midsize convertibles are the Saab 9-3, the Volkswagen Eos and the Volvo C70. The small cars winners are the Honda Civic, the Mitsubishi Lancer, the Scion XB, the Subaru Impreza, the Toyota Corolla, and the Volkswagen Rabbit. The minicar winner is the Honda Fit. The minivan winners are the Honda Odyssey, the Hyundai Entourage, and the Kia Sedona. The Large SUV winners are the Audi Q7, the Buick Enclave, the Chevrolet Traverse, the GMC Acadia, and the Saturn Outlook. The midsize SUV winners are Acura MDX, the Acura RDX, the BMW X3, the BMW X5, the Ford Edge, the Ford Flex, the Ford Taurus X, the Honda Pilot, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Hyundai Veracruz, the Infiniti EX35, the Lincoln MKX, the Mercedes M Class, the Nissan Murano, the Saturn Vue, the Subaru Tribeca, the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the Toyota Highlander and the Volvo XC90. These crash test rating are released each year for every type of vehicle.
Honda Post Record Breaking May Auto Sale
With the month of May over, car manufacturers are already reporting their sales output for the month. The American Honda Motor Co. reported that they have broken their May sales record previously set in 2004. For the past month, the company sold 145,367 cars and light trucks. Last year, for the month of May, Honda sold 141,810 vehicles.
The increase is boosted by good sales for the Honda division which sold 129,447 cars and light trucks. Last year, the division sold 125,639 cars and light trucks combined. Last month has more selling days than the previous year which resulted to a daily selling rate of a 1.4 percent drop for American Honda.
The additional selling day also resulted to a 0.9 percent decrease for the Honda division. For the first five months of the year, Honda has already sold 625,994 vehicles which represent a one percent increase as compared to the first five months of 2006.
Honda’s increased sale is the effect of the all-time record sales for the compact Civic and the Honda Fit. The crossover SUV CR-V also posted its highest May sales record. Honda sold 39,993 units of the Civic last month, marking an increase of 32.6 percent as compared to May 2006 Civic sales. The previous record for the Civic sale was set on August of 2001. The hybrid version of the Civic also broke the all-time record set on August of 2005. Last month, 4,250 units of the Civic Hybrid were sold and that is an increase of 50.4 percent compared to May 2006.
Sales for the crossover CR-V increased by 35.9 percent compared to last year during the same month. The five-door hatchback Fit sets sales records when Honda sold 5,361 units of the award-winning auto model. Month to date sale shows a decrease of 1.8 percent due to the additional selling day. A 99.3 percent sales increase was also recorded for the first five months of the year for the Fit compared to the first five months of 2006.
The increased sale of the smaller Civic and Fit as well as the relatively small CR-V is pointed out as the trend in the US car market. “Small is big right now," Dick Colliver, the executive vice president of American Honda, said. “Smaller vehicles have become more attractive for multiple reasons and we expect this trend to continue for the time being.”
Meanwhile, the Accord suffered from declining sale. Last month, American Honda sold 31,915 of the midsize sedan. Last year, during the same month, Honda sold 36,967 units of the Accord. That shows a decrease of 17 percent with the additional selling day worsening the sales reduction.
As for Honda’s luxury division Acura, a 5.3 percent sales drop was reported. The vehicles across Acura’s lineup excluding the MDX and the NSX posted sales decrease. The MDX which is known for its high performance even without aftermarket ACT parts posted a 27.2 percent sales increase. Last month, American Honda sold 4,623 units while for May 2006, Honda only sold 3,494 units of the midsize luxury crossover SUV. The Acura division posted a reduction in sales for the first five months of the year by 11.8 percent compared to last year’s first five months.

Trading in acura mdx for honda civic hybrid, how much depreciation in $ will mdx have?
mdx is 3 months old with slight scratches at the rear door. driven for 2500 miles
i had put in almost half its value when mdx was bought... kbb does not have trade in value for 2008 model.
MDXs (unfortunately) do NOT hold up well in the books. If you only bought it 3 mo nths ago, you are likely well upside down too. did you put any cash down? did you trade in a car you were upside down on?
If you answered "no" to 1, and "yes" to 2, you are an owner for the long forseeable future
go to www.kbb.com - look up the TRADE IN value for your car - and evaluate it as being in average condition. then take $2000 off that and you will have approximately what your car is worth on trade.
EDIT - ah if it is a 2008, go to Edmunds.com and build an invoice for your car. Then deduct abouut 20% off invoice. That will get you close to the trade in value.
The problem with trading a current-year car is that the depreciation is greatest in the first year. As a buyer, there has to be a financial incentive to purchase a pre-owned 08 with 2500 miles and scratches. So, the resale value needs to be under current new value, therefore the big hit on first-year depreciation.
I know gas is high - but you will be taking a HUGE financial hit to sell out of the car now. The loss of value is biggest at this point.
Taking into account the difference in fuel economy, price of gas, and miles you drive, how long will it take you to break even, and recover the financial loss?
Crossovers, SUVs help Honda post 12.5% sales increase
Honda's April sales increased 12.5% from a year earlier as crossovers, SUVs and even its Ridgeline pickup truck outperformed most of its passenger car models.
