Writing With Beautiful Feather Pens
These fancy feather pens look not only cute in a pen holder or kept on table but can be a nice gift item given to somebody. They are quiet easy to be made at home. These pens are being used since ancient times. During seven century people began using feathers for writing purposes. They used feathers of crows, turkeys, swans and geese for making these quill pens as feathers of these birds had thicker shaft. In ancient medieval times these pens were also used by draftsmen and artist for writing manuscripts and calligraphic purposes even today also these quill pens are still used by calligraphers.
Feather pens can be a beautiful gift item given on wedding along with other gifts. Even these pens can be used on special occasions like signing of marriage certificates by bride and groom and will make them feel special as other ordinary pens will completely look out of place on this special occasion. As marriage is considered to be a sacred life time event of life so everything needs to be special on this day including the pen. Even you can let your guests write their sentiments on your guestbook with this majestic feather pen.
Apart from being a magnificent gift item feather pens nibs are used to create linear figures or flamboyant decorations on paper. The design of fountain pen was also influenced by quill pens which were status tools for people during 1950s and 1960s.It is the soft and sinuous tip and its flexibility which makes it suitable for drawing variety of strokes. Like fountain pen hollow shaft of feather pen acts as reservoir of ink. We can make this beautiful feather quill pens at home by following simple steps. For making this quill pen we will require things like feathers, cake pan, sand, ink, paper, oven, knife and sand.
1) First of all we need to heat the sand in oven. For this take a cake pan and put sand into it and preheat the oven at 450 degrees and now place the cake pan in the oven and leave it for fifteen minutes.
2) After 15 minutes take out the cake pan and gently slide feather into the hot sand and let it cool.
3) Diagonally cut the end of the quill in downward motion shaving off the quill tip and sand but whittle the quill carefully so that you don't ruin the quill and hollow the interior portion of quill.
4) Make small slits on both sides of the quill as these slits will help in absorbing more ink when the tip will be put into the ink and now write on the paper to test your feather pen.
Above was the way of making pens of feather but by being little bit of creative we can turn any ordinary ball point pen into feather pen and embellish it with gemstones, pastel colors, feathers and give them a traditional and authentic look. Also now a days many pen manufacturers have launched feather shaped pens which not only look pretty but are quiet cheap also.

Best way for smooth finish on painted interior trim?
I am installing and painting new pre-primed MDF trim in a house. Once nail holes and joints are filled, I'm lightly sanding overall with fine paper for a smooth finish. I'm using an airless sprayer with a tip that provides approximately 6" coverage, spraying a white semi-gloss interior latex. The finished product is smooth, but obviously has dust nibs and some overspray from nearby trim. Remembering a technique from auto painting, I lightly scuffed a sample piece of painted trim with an extra-fine sanding pad and then applied a wax/polish normally used for gel-coat and fiberglass. The result was an unbelievably smooth finish, but very fine scratches are visible when the light hits it just right. Has anyone used a technique similar to "color sanding" with interior latex and if so, what should be used as a final polish instead of the gel-coat polish? Maybe a polishing compound between sanding and wax? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
have you tried to "wet sand" it? Or did you not learn that in the paint and body shop?
Signed With a Flourish
Poet and punk rocker Patti Smith, who spoke at the PEN World Voices Festival at Cooper Union earlier this year, had this advice for writers: "Buy yourself a nice pen." Bonham's on Madison Avenue makes that more tempting on Thursday, Aug. 19, when it hosts an auction of hundreds of vintage fountain pens. The pens come from the collection of actor Michael Tucci and from the private Clavius ...
