Unless you have been living under a rock since the sudden gas price rises, you probably will have heard of products and kits that claim to show you how to run a car on water. However, some people claim that these kits are nothing but scams and that they won't help you to increase gas mileage. Keep reading to learn if the scientific principles behind these water conversion kits are real, as well as if the kits themselves actually work.
Most kits that claim to show you how to run a car on water were designed, created and publicized by everyday people who were just sick of gas price rises. Generally, you get the instructions and blueprints with the kit, which will also include a section of what things you need to buy at the hardware store or find around the house.
Behind these run a car on water kits is the basic scientific principle of what is known as "
Brown's Gas"/HHO. This gas comes from the electrolysis (basically splitting) of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen can then be burnt to provide energy in a similar way that hybrid cars use it. Basically, the use of "Brown's Gas" allows the engine to operate with a much higher level of fuel efficiency. Normal cars waste around 80% of the gas in the tank! However, using a water car kit you should be able to cut this figure in half to around 40% fuel wastage- that means a massive saving in gas bills. Note how I said "gas bills". You will still have to put gas in the tank, but because your consumption is dropping due to the effect of the "Brown's Gas", you should only have to use around half as much gas a year. For the average American, that equates to savings of $1250 a year- those of us who do more driving would save even more,
Now that we know the scientific principle behind kits that show you how to run a car on water are real, we need to look at whether the kits themselves are scams. Essentially, they involve installing a system in the engine bay of a car that allows the electrolysis of water. A few hours work are required to install the electrolysis device, piping and basic electronic devices. All necessary components can be purchased from local hardware stores and are not very expensive.
When I installed one of these run a car on water kits in my 1995 Toyota Paseo 1.5L, I went from around 30mpg to a whopping average 54mpg. Now that's not quite double mileage, but my driving habits have got worse since I installed the kit which probably explain the slightly lower than 50% reduction levels. Those of you who have bigger engines in your cars will probably benefit with a higher level of increased gas mileage. What I'm saying here is that kits that claim how to run a car on water are not scams!

Who Do You Turn To For Toyota Service?
Toyota has grown amazingly in the past century since its inception, to become one of the leading car manufacturers in the West. There are a huge number of popular Toyota models – the brand is well-recognised for its reliability. In fact, in July 2008 Toyota came out ahead of every other brand mentioned in the Global Pulse Survey, administered by the Reputation Institute of New York. Toyotas definitely have their own quirks and oddities, though – today we are looking at how to choose a good mechanic for your Toyota, both for new car service and ordinary car repairs.
Toyota car service – what to look for
Toyotas are very reliable cars; drivers note that their main tendency is just to keep on going and going, no matter what punishment you administer! Because of this you run a very real risk of leaving problems until they require major repairs, and have possibly caused related problems. Look for a car servicer and mechanic that:
- Makes it simple and easy to have your regular services performed (otherwise it can be tempting to leave them too long)
- Is experienced. Toyotas can be deteriorating before they show any overt problems, and it takes a skilled eye and ear to diagnose problems with them sometimes.
Other than this, we'd recommend a mechanic that follows all the general guidelines for high-quality work and excellent customer service. Your Toyota repairer should:
- Offer a warranty on their work, at least 12 months in duration.
- Give you an upfront quote
- Offer you the option to have your Toyota repaired at your home or work
- If you travel a lot, look for a mechanic that has a nationwide network to have your repairs done easily, no matter where you are.
Popular models of Toyota and their quirks
The mechanic doing your Toyota repairs should have experience with several of the popular Toyota models:
- 4 Runner
- Coaster
- Kluger
- Prado
- Supra
- Aurion
- Corolla
- Landcruiser
- Prius
- Surf
- Avalon
- Echo
- Lexcen
- RAV4
- Tarago
- Avensis
- Estima
- Lite Ace
- Soarer
- Townace
- Camry
- Hiace
- MR 2
- Spacia
- Vienta
- Celica
- Hilux
- Paseo
- Starlet
- Yaris
Each of these models has their own quirks – for example, Yaris's are known for their transmission issues, as well as ‘cosmetic' faults with climate control. Landcruisers need attention in the chassis and underbody area, especially if they do a decent amount of four-wheel-driving. The steering and electrics are often trouble spots on Corollas, and a mechanic skilled in Toyota repair will pay particular attention to these trouble spots.
Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreements- Right for You?
Toyota offers an addition to their factory warranty, the Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement. Often you are able to include the cost of this service agreement in your lease, and in return you get scheduled servicing at a genuine Toyota dealer.
These agreements are good in some circumstances, but for many they mean extra costs on their car repairs and servicing over simply calling a mechanic when necessary. They are somewhat like an auto club membership – you have to pay the periodic fee, even if you don't use the available cover. There are also quite a number of mechanics Australia wide that can perform scheduled servicing for new Toyotas as specified in the log book, and using genuine parts – at a fraction of the cost of a service agreement. Having a third party perform your scheduled servicing will not void your factory warranty for new cars – this is guaranteed by Australian consumer law.
Owning a Toyota is even easier than usual if you find a convenient, skilled mechanic that ticks all the right boxes. In many cases the right mechanic is just in front of your nose!

What happens if I didn't line up the marks on the oil pump gear?
I re-did my oil pump seals on my 1992 Toyota Paseo recently. Since then it has leaked at high-rpm. After reading my Haynes manual on how to do the procedure (I didn't use it the first time, just the help of a friend) it said explicitly to line up the "mark" on the main oil pump gear. Specifically that it needed to face into the pump. I'm not sure if I did this or not. What kind of rammafications would this have? I assume it's important otherwise they wouldn't bother mentioning it or having the dot in the first place. For reference, it is very similar to this image:
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m39/dz63/96%20Camry%2022L%20Auto%205S-FE%20Timing%20Belt/Step42-innerandouterrotorindentatio.jpg
Except that it's a dot instead of an arrow. This is for a Toyota Camry.
I think the reason for aligning the dots is. because the two pieces are made as a set and the clearances are extremely close. If the inner and outer gear are not matched the clearances may be too close in spots, and too loose in others. Here is a site that explains how they work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerotor and here is a site explaining it in more detail, if you can understand it ( I think I understand some of it). http://www.fluent.com/solutions/automotive/ex238.pdf Good Luck
