The older Scalextric cars from the 1970s and 1980s are great models but can seem slow and difficult to race by the standards set by modern Scalextric cars. Luckily these classic Scalextric cars can be upgraded to greatly enhance their track performance making them competitive on the track while not removing any of the enjoyment and skill required for the older Scalextric cars.

This article lists seven simple changes to greatly improve your classic Scalextric car. We have based this article on a 1970s Scalextric C.052 Ford Escort RS1600 which was selected as being typical of the Scalextric cars of the period. It was not prepared before the test apart from ensuring the motor operated as expected and the car was complete, electrically and mechanically with no obvious faults. The tyres were not cracked or split to any great degree and still had grip when run on classic Scalextric track. Our overall impression is that this car had been stood unused for a long period of time.

The results are based on a Scalextric Sport track with a test circuit specifically designed for this test. Built from the modern Sport Scalextric track the surface offers little mechanical grip with a smoother surface compared to the original classic Scalextric track. It incorporated tight inner corner hairpin sections, long straights, chicanes, corners that tightened, corners that opened out. Essentially all types of challenges.

Step 1: After conducting a visual inspection we measured the best lap times the car could achieve. The best lap time achieved was 18.72 seconds. Then the car was given an electrical service with new; copper pick up braids, pick up pins and wires from the pick up assembly to the motor. A retest gave a new lap time of 15.22 seconds which is an improvement of around 18%.

Step 2: Then, the car given a full lubrication service with all the motor and axle bearings given a small drop of oil each. Also, the gears were lightly coated with Teflon impregnated grease. A retest of the car gave a new best lap time of 13.77 seconds which is a further improvement of around 9.5%.

Step 3: After the lubrication service, slightly wider axles were fitted and a little weight added to the rear of the chassis. Again the car was tested of the track and this time gave a best lap time of 12.50 seconds which is an improvement of 9.2%.

Step 4: Next a set of high grip replacement SuperSlix tyres were fitted to the rear wheel hubs. A retest gave a new best lap time of 9.99 seconds which is a further 20.1%.

Step 5: With the improvement made so far the next step was to replace the original Johnson motor with a new Mabuchi motor. This more powerful and lighter motor slightly increased the car's lap time, probably due to problems in getting the power down to the track. The best lap time recorded was 10.49 seconds which is a degradation of 0.5%.

Step 6: In order to give the car a chance to use the power available from the Mabuchi motor a Neodymium magnet was added to the chassis of the Escort. The best lap time achieved was 9.12 seconds which was an improvement of 25.5%

Step 7: Our final change was to add MAX Grip tyres as some tyre slip was clearly evident even with the Neodymium magnet present. These replacement SuperSlix tyres are manufactured from a latex material and give outstanding track grip. The best lap achieved a time of 6.44 seconds which was a further improvement of 25.5%.

The overall improvement in lap times make this car competitive on the track while not removing any of the enjoyment and skill required. With these simple changes this car was almost a staggering 3 times faster than when purchased.

Buying a Private Number Plate

Private number plates have traditionally been associated with the rich and the famous or anyone wanting to show the world how successful they have become. However in today’s motoring world the popularity of personal number plates has moved into the fast lane with ever more of them being spotted on our roads. Private number plates are being enjoyed by people from all walks of life and give their owners vehicles a truly unique and distinctive mark.

There are millions of private number plates to choose from so finding one to suit you will not be hard. For some inspiration you can search your name or birthday or for a cost effective solution why not try and find your initials? When purchasing your new car registration number you will need to provide what is known as a nominee name. This is the name that appears in the V5 logbook for the vehicle the number will be assigned to. If you are purchasing a personal car registration as a gift be sure to check this name is correct when ordering.

There are certain things to bear in mind when choosing your own private number plates however the main question you must ask yourself is can the personal number plate go on your vehicle? The law states that a vehicle can be made to look older than it is but can never appear newer. For example, if you own a “55” reg car you could assign a “51” reg number plate or even a prefix or suffix registration such as a “P” reg however you could not assign a newer “56” registration number to your car. Private number plates can also be assigned to motorbikes, providing they follow this golden rule.

When you purchase a private number plate an £80 transfer fee must be paid. This money is a fix fee set by the DVLA to cover the cost and administration of assigning the number plate to your vehicle. This fee is also payable if you decide to transfer the registration from vehicle to vehicle. The current fee for putting a registration number on retention is £105 which is made up of the £80 assignment fee and £25 retention fee. The retention facility enables a registration number to be taken off a vehicle and held on a certificate pending assignment at a later date. Private number plates can be held indefinitely on certificates but must be renewed annually for £25.

Assigning you new number plate to your vehicle couldn’t be simpler and full instructions will be found on the reverse of you registrations certificate of entitlement. Applications can be made by post however a better option is to apply in person at your local DVLA where the transfer is completed as you wait. You will need you V5 Logbook, a photocopy of your tax disc and a copy of your MOT if applicable when assigning your registration and in return you will receive an updated tax disc and MOT (if applicable) showing your new registration number. An updated V5 log book will be sent later from DVLA Swansea. All that would be left to do is have your acrylic number plates produced and fix them to your vehicle. You are then ready to display you new number plate with pride!

Tiburon clutch problems?

I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT 6 speed. Recently I have been having problems with what I believe is my clutch. When I am at a complete stop, in 1st gear, I release the clutch. My car will not pull forward at all and I have to force it by pushing the gas in till about 3000+ rpm while releasing the clutch which means I am riding the clutch. Usually my car will jerk really bad or stall. There is no problem at all with shifting the other gears(2nd and above), it is just 1st gear when I am at a stop. I talked with a friend, and he said that my clutch might need to be adjusted. I'm not sure what the problem is. I've had the car for a year, and it I haven't been having this problem until lately. I don't smell any kind of burning smells either. Could it be that my clutch pedal isn't releasing the clutch? I also heard that this could be a problem with some of the syncros, pressure plates or clutch bearings. Or is there another problem? Please help.

"LT" is right. There is no clutch adjustment in this year model. Its got a hydraulic self adjustment system. Based on your description, it fits perfectly to a worn out clutch scenario. It is typical to 03 models. They have initially came with a dual mass flywheel where Hyundai had nothing but problems. As result of this, Hyundai reversed the clutch system to conventional style which corrected this premature clutch wear. I would recommend you to convert your clutch system from dual to single flywheel. This way you will avoid future premature wear.
