Hello and welcome back to our series on automotive tools and how to guides for the new weekend warrior auto mechanic. This isn't meant for the professional, but rather the average Joe who is looking to get his hands a little dirty on the weekends. In the past, we have covered a lot of tools but in today's article I'm going to cover your engine's lubrication system. Without proper lubrication your engine would eventually seize and destroy itself.

What the lubrication system does is it essentially keeps oil moving through or past your engine's critical moving parts. A brief list would be the crankshaft, camshafts, connecting rods, pistons, lifters, valve springs. Anything with lots of movement and metal on metal contact generally need to be lubricated. The reduction in friction also lowers the engine's operating temperature.

All of this circulation is done by the oil pump. Typically your car's oil pump will be located done in the oil pan and operates by force driven off of the camshaft or crankshaft. The oil filter removes any large debris that may be in the oil circulation before the debris has a chance to damage critical engine components. Of course, the secondary benefit of reducing friction is that the parts won't wear against each other as quickly as they would otherwise. This in turn contributes to a longer engine life. With all of these things in mind you can see why changing your oil on a regular basis is so important. More than that - what kind of oil you use matters as well. Well, it's good to see a brand like Subaru taking advantage of the relative disarray that is the automotive market.
