The question of how to get from Kenya to Tanzania or from Tanzania to Kenya is one of cost. To fly is the easiest and quickest way but is a more expensive option. Namanga is a hot dry place. Local roadside shacks supply sodas [fizzy drinks] alcohol and local food; flies and dust abound. Namanga is not a place to hang about, it is merely exists for you to get your visa stamp and move on - shopping can left for the comfort of Nairobi or Arusha.

The shuttle buses leave from outside the Parkside Hotel in Nairobi or Labella Luna Hotel in Arusha. The shuttle busses leave at 8h00 in the morning and 14:00 pm in the afternoon; getting to their respective destinations at about 14h00 and 20h00. If you travel from Tanzania to Kenya the shuttles can drop you off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. I would ensure before you set off that the driver is aware of your need for the airport and agreed to drop you off. The shuttles can also pick you up from the airport at the start of your safari.

The shuttles take about six hours to travel between the two cities. The main companies are Rainbow Shuttle, Riverside Shuttle, The Impala Shuttle and Jamii Shuttle. It should cost about US$25 per person between Nairobi and Arusha, however depending on the season fares can be sometimes be negotiable. Remember when attempting to negotiate it is done with good humor, never show irritation or raise your voice as this is considered to be bad manners.

At the Namanga Border the driver will guide you through the logistics of border crossing. He will stop at immigration on both sides of the border leaving you only a few steps to get an exit stamp and then drive on to the other side of the border to get your entry stamp. Some travelers get their visas in advance but many get their visas on arrival at the border post. Remember any charges for your visa are in paid in US$ currency.

Try not to exchange any money with anyone at Namanga or with the drivers of the shuttle buses. If you need to exchange money at the border the beast place is either at the immigration post or there are now proper bureau de changes on the border. However, try to keep the bulk of your currency transactions for the bureaus in town or the hotels [if pushed for time]. You will get a better exchange rate in town and it is safer; less risk of being ripped off. Never, never exchange money on the street no matter what exchange rate is offered!

A cheaper and much more adventurous way to get from Nairobi and into Arusha is by Peugeot 505 taxi. This is not recommended as these cars are always overcrowded and many are not roadworthy. This mode of transport is almost exclusively used by local people as it is cheaper and they are more plentiful than the shuttle buses. An advantage of travelling this way is you can leave anytime of day. There are no set times for departure as these cars wait in line at the bus stations and once a car is full of passengers it will then leave for the border.

Your Peugeot 505 will terminate at the gates to the border and you and your baggage will have to walk across the rather lengthy stretch across the border no-man's-land; all the time braving the hordes wanting to carry your bags, exchange money, sell curios etc. Remembering if you choose this way to take it all as part of the adventure, you are a visitor and it is not good manners to show irritation at the people trying to make a living at the border. Once you have crossed the border you then have to negotiate a Peugeot 505 taxi for the remainder of your journey. These taxis are directly outside the border post gate and can't be missed.

Enjoy your travel time - this 'transfer' part of your safari may not be the most memorable part of you adventure in East Africa; however, you are passing through a culture most probably very different from your own; experiencing this is an opportunity not to be missed. If you are lucky enough to pass along this route if it has been raining for some time the greenness and beauty of the countryside is something to appreciate.

I was wondering weather someone could tell me why my scooter will now all of a sudden only do 20mph max and 5 up a hill i thought it mite be a dodgy clutch shoes but does anyone else have any suggestions. kind regards, cashmore

If it's the clutch the engine will keep the same rpms while scooter slows down. If this is not the case you need to check spark plug and fuel. Is the gas fresh?
