Need help matching tire size.. rims.. etc?

Hi, I'm planning to buy a Subaru WRX, the car have 225/50 16 inch rims, and i want to keep that original rim for quite awhile.. until i can afford another rim. I want to get performance tires for all 4 wheels, on top of that.. i dont want the tires to look big.. on the rims.. so im planning to get 225/40 R16 tires... The thing is.. will the tires fit into this rim? or is it possible to try..?

Another thing is, what's a good rim size for track / daily use?
I'm planning to buy OEM STI rims...but im not sure if it'll look good on the WRX.

for as long as you get tires with the dimension R16, it will fit your 16-inch rim. the thing is, you want to keep your overall diameter equal to the OEM tire diameter. going from 225/50 to 225/40 will make your overall diameter smaller, which can lead to some problems, foremost is inaccuracy of your speedometer (you'll be slower than your speedometer indicates). what could work is upgrading to 17-inchers, and getting either 225/40's or 225/45's so that the tire won't look very big, but it won't be very bumpy either because that's still pretty thick. this is also okay for daily use if you don't go through a lot of potholes often, of course 16's on 50-series tires would be more comfortable. i wouldn't really know what's good for track use, i know you have to use specialized tires with thicker sidewalls so they don't get pressed toward the tarmac while you're cornering hard or drifting.
