Getting Started

Having a license to drive, whether you are a student driver or otherwise, simply means that you have gone through a standard process where they will approve whether you are eligible for driving a vehicle. Depending on what state you're in, that means eye testing, checking for disabilities, drug tests and a written driving exam, among other things. When driving a car, never forget a license-it's illegal to drive anywhere without it!

For student drivers, it's usually best to have take lessons from a professional driver's institute. Some states allow a supervisor to accompany student drivers. Practice is still your best way to learn driving.

Shake off your nerves, keep safe, drive defensively and put that seatbelt on.

Manual Driving

  1. Try to get started on a level ground. Adjust your seat to easily access the pedals, and arrange the sideways and rearview mirror in such a way that a mere glance can make you see the reflection.
  2. Manual automobiles are different from automatic ones by their three pedals. Starting from your left side you have your clutch, the brake and the accelerator. The acronym CBA should help you remember.
  3. The clutch disconnects the engine from the wheels while they are both moving and spinning. This allows a safe transition between gears without grinding down the gear's teeth.
  4. Before starting the car, make sure that the gear shift is in neutral. Turn on the engine and press down on the clutch until it reaches the floor. Put down the emergency break. Put the gear shift in first gear.
  5. If you notice, you can make the vehicle go forward if you release the clutch slowly. You can further the acceleration by slowly pressing down on the accelerator as you slowly release the clutch at the same time. By the time you have released the clutch completely; your accelerator has taken over. Make sure your left foot is lightly resting over the brake.
  6. Vehicle stalling while shifting from clutch to accelerator can be tricky, but all it takes is a little practice and having a feel for the engine.
  7. You may only shift to the next gear in the rule of 20s. Once you've reached 20 mph, you may then shift to the second gear, and once you've reached 40 mph, you may shift to the third, and so on. This is the same for deceleration. Never skip gears!
  8. To shift gears, quickly but gradually release the accelerator and press down the clutch. Shift the gear shift to the next gear while the clutch is down. After shifting gears, quickly press down on the accelerator while releasing the clutch at the same time.
  9. If you are in the first gear, you may brake the car using the clutch by releasing the accelerator and pressing down the clutch. For the second gear upward, you must use the brake.
  10. When approaching turns or braking, make sure to slow down to at least the second gear (when turning) and the first gear (when slowing down or stopping).
  11. To stop, bring your car down to the first gear. Gently push down the brake until you've achieved full stop. Pull up the emergency brake.

Automatic Driving

  1. Unlike manual vehicles, automatic vehicles only have two pedals, the brake and the accelerator. You will only have to use one foot to press these pedals.
  2. Get in the car, and the gear shift should be in Park (marked with P).
  3. Press on the brake pedal and start the engine. Put the gear shift into Drive (marked as D) or Reverse (marked as R), whichever way you need the vehicle to go. Keep in mind that the engine will not start unless
  4. Slowly take off the brake and press on the accelerator to gain speed.
  5. To slow down, gradually tap on the brake until you have reached your desired speed. To stop completely, slow down first, take off your foot off the accelerator and brake gradually and completely. Put the car back in Park.

Wisdom is the sharing of wise experiences and knowledge, but a lot of it is common sense. Anti-lock Brakes

What are anti-lock brakes? Not many people know about them, but anti-lock brakes are something that almost everyone uses every time they step into a vehicle. Anti-lock brakes are an extremely helpful system of braking that makes stopping a great deal easier than it would be otherwise.

The main problem with brakes that are not anti-lock is that they have a tendency to lock up when a rapid stop is required. A wheel that is skidding does not have as much traction as one that is not skidding. Hence, anti-lock brakes keep brakes from locking up and reducing the amount of traction the wheels have.

The difference between stopping with anti-lock brakes and without anti-lock brakes is tremendous. An average driver using anti-lock brakes will be able to stop faster and with more control than a professional driver who is not using anti-lock brakes. That is a major difference.

Every anti-lock brake system has four main components: speed sensors, a pump, valves, and a controller. Speed sensors are located at each wheel. These sensors let the car's built-in computer know when a wheel is about to lock up. The valves serve the important role of regulating the force at which each individual brake can be applied.

The valves have three standard positions in which they regulate the brake pressure. When a valve is in open position, pressure from the master cylinder is allowed to pass through to the brake. This allows the brake pressure to increase. When a valve is blocking the brake line, it does not allow more pressure to be applied even if the driver pushes the brake harder. A valve can also be somewhere between the open and closed positions in order to release some pressure from a brake.

The pump works with the valves to help regulate brake pressure. When a valve releases pressure from a brake, the pump is ready to raise the pressure back if it is needed. All of these parts work together with the controller, which is the car’s computer. When things function properly, the car’s computer is able to adjust the amount of brake pressure on each brake. The end result is a rapid deceleration that does not cause the wheels to lock up.

Brakes lock up because a wheel can stop much faster than a vehicle can. It can take five seconds or more for a car moving at 60 mph to come to a complete stop. A wheel, on the other hand, can come to a complete stop within one second. A car’s computer observes the speed at which wheels are accelerating and decelerating. When the computer sees that a wheel is decelerating much faster than is possible, the computer causes the valve that is on that wheel’s brake line to close. This prevents the driver’s mashing the brake pedal down from locking up all of the wheels.

Anti-lock brakes are beautifully engineered devices that are used in almost all vehicles now. When functioning properly, they allow rapid decelerations without wheels locking up. This makes driving safer for everyone.

What do I need to do to stop brake dust from making my rims dirty?

What kind of breaks should I buy, or what do I need to do to keep them from becoming BLACK. IT's so annoying that i have to clean them like once a week and the dust gets in my nails, and its not easy cleaning it off. I just want to know some ways to stop this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have an 01 explorer sport if that helps.

try getting a higher performance brake pads, such as thermo quiet, or brembo if u can afford it, the thermo's are better for your vehichle.and they last longer and they are quiet. im assuming u bought bigger rims and still have the factory brake set up, thats why your rims are always dirty, cause the brakes are working twice as hard with the bigger rims,, more rotating mass. also look into getting bigger rotors as well.
