Rear Sway Bar Installation Tips
There are many car parts out there that are going to make your car better, but one of the simplest ways to improve your ride is to install a new rear sway bar. The rear sway bar effectively connects both sides of the car’s suspension together so that the rear of the vehicle feels more connected to the rest of the car. This sort of upgrade is strictly to improve handling and suspension performance. Here is a quick guide to changing yours.
- Make sure that your rear suspension is under load, or this installation will be much harder than it needs to be. Also, be sure to give yourself enough space under the car to work and that you wear protective goggles or glasses to prevent debris from getting in your eyes.
- Take a look under your car and make sure that you have one installed. If you don’t, you can skip the removal of the old one and go straight to the installation parts. First, find the points where the sway bar connects to the end links on your rear suspension. You should have something to break the screws loose and once that has soaked into the metal, you can attempt to remove the bolts. These should come out relatively easily and then you can work on removing the bar. Simply remove the bar by wiggling it past the exhaust and then you can work on installing the new one.
- If your new sway bar is bigger, it may take a little more work to fit it into place. Once there, you should be able to work the bar into place and start to reattach the bolts. Once these have been put in, you should be able to tighten everything down and have the bar solidly in place.
- Test the new bar. Drive around your neighborhood, or better yet a deserted parking lot, and give the wheel a few hard turns. If everything feels like it is up to snuff, then you have successfully installed a new sway bar, otherwise you can take your car back and retighten all the bolts one more time, making sure not to strip them or break them off.
The rear sway bar will help to induce a more neutral or oversteery feel for your car, depending on how large of a bar you install. It will also help to reduce the body roll and improve the handling as well.

What is a reasonable price to replace a sway bar?
I have a 2003 buick century and I was told it will not pass inspection without a new sway bar and springs on the front and rear. Does anyone out there know a reasonable price for replacement on these?
The mechanic says it is not there, it is broken off or something. I have never had problem with them before and hope to not start, but I am planning on at least one or two estimates.
Sway bars simply do not break or otherwise fail.... the links / or bushings may require replacement but the bar itself ... no. Unless the springs are physically broken ( show me the break - or demonstrate more than 1" variation of ride height from side to side ) they are legal. I think the shop is trying to sell you unnecessary service. Go to another facility to have your inspection performed.
POSTELL: Constitution in decline
ANALYSIS/OPINION: It's time to reform our administrative state. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was right when she said Congress would have to "pass the health care bill so you can find out what's in it." That's because the health care bill, like most major laws passed by Congress over the past hundred years, isn't really a law. Rather, Obamacare is a series of assignments to bureaucrats in the ...
