The price of fuel today has many looking at downsizing their vehicle's size. Although one may downsize, they still may not want to give up the ability to drive off road and through adverse weather conditions. This is where the compact SUV becomes attractive.

When compared to larger SUVs the smaller SUV typically uses less fuel. Buying a vehicle with a 4-cylinder engine will generally provide higher gasoline mileage per gallon than do bigger SUVs with larger engines. Some smaller SUV's, typically hybrids, have a rating of 36 miles per gallon in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway for a two-wheel-drive model. Yes, the supplemental electric power helps boost city mileage more than highway mileage.

The second benefit of having a smaller SUV is that these vehicles are priced affordably compared to larger SUVs.

Smaller SUVs often have more nimble handling than do bigger SUVs. For instance, the turning circle of a Jeep Wrangler is 34.9 feet, which is less than that for a Toyota Camry sedan. Compare that to the 43-foot turning circle for a full-size Chevrolet Suburban SUV, which can make U-turns and some parking maneuvers a bit problematic.

Another benefit of the smaller SUV's are the extra features. For open-air driving, the Jeep Wrangler has a foldable soft-top, The Saturn Vue wears dent-resistant plastic body panels, and the Honda Element can be easy to load because it has side cargo doors with no fixed pillar. The tailgate on the Element is a clamshell design for easy loading, too, while the RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander are now offered with three rows of seats, if needed.

The Nissan Xterra debuted with stylish, tubular-looking roof rails that can accommodate a range of storage baskets and kits now also includes a step integrated into the side of the rear bumper. The step gives owners a leg up, if you will, so they can more easily reach items stored in the overhead roof racks. Nissan officials said they added this step after watching Xterra owners at ski facilities slip their feet into the tops of the rear tires in order to reach their ski equipment atop the Xterra.

Compact sport utilities may bring memories of early, small, rollover-prone, four-wheel-drive vehicles, but in recent years the vehicles have increased their track, meaning the distance between the two front or two rear wheels, which contributes to better stability.

Further, electronic stability control is available on several models. It's standard, for example, on Toyota's RAV4.

Small SUVs are also adding more standard safety features. The Kia Sportage ranks as the lowest-priced SUVs that comes with standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control and six standard airbags, including front seat-mounted side airbags and curtain airbags for both front and rear seats.

So what are the disadvantages of the smaller SUV? There is only a couple. Towing is one. Generally consumers can't expect to tow as much behind small SUVs as they might with larger sport utilities that have larger engines. For instance, the towing limit for a V8-powered Chevrolet Tahoe is 8,200 pounds-enough for a sizable trailer-while the much smaller Honda CR-V, which comes only with a four-cylinder engine, has a towing capacity of just 1,500 pounds.

Smaller SUVs also can't carry as much cargo. Generally, room behind the front seats for cargo ranges up to 72 cubic feet or so in compact SUVs, while large sport utilities offer more storage space. Maximum payload also is greater in the bigger SUVs.

So if you are thinking of downsizing in regards to size, rest assured, you won't have to downsize in quality and safety, there are many choices out there to choose from, depending on the 'size' of your time to do the research.

Why are Small Suvs Better for Your Family?

Cars are perhaps one of the costliest investments in one’s life at the same time being an object of utility as well as prestige. Therefore, buying a car needs much consideration and many things should be borne in mind before taking the crucial decision of buying a car. Moreover, with so many SUVs and other highend cars making their presence felt in the market arena, the choice has become even more difficult than it ever was. Therefore, to make your decision a little easier, this article will provide you with insights as to why it is better to but small SUVs rather than opting for bigger ones.

-The first aspect that you will require to keep in mind is the escalating fuel price. It is a fact that fuel price is going higher and higher every day and that is why everyone is actually looking to downsize their vehicles. However, downsizing does not necessarily mean that one has to give up the ability of driving through off roads or adverse weather conditions – the obvious way out here are highend cars and compact SUVs. In comparison with larger highend cars, smaller and more compact SUVs typically need less fuel and by simply buying a 4-cylinder engine powered car, you will be able to gain more mileage for each gallon of fuel.
-The second most important argument for buying small highend cars for your family is their affordability. The compact SUVs are priced affordably in comparison to larger ones that are priced remarkable and often beyond most people’s reach. It is always better to vie for something within one’s ambit rather than go for frustrating financing techniques, which can only worsen the situation.
-The handling efficiency of smaller SUVs again gives them an edge over other bigger highend cars. For instance, a Jeep wrangler would need 34.9 feet radius to turn, which is by far less than that of a Toyota Camry Sedan, making maneuvering a lot easier.
-The smaller SUVs include many features that one cannot easily find in the larger highend cars. These include, but are not limited to, foldable top, dent resistance, easy loading, multiple seating rows, and so on. For example, the Nissan Xterra is equipped with stylish tubular rails on the roof that easily accommodates a number of baskets for storage and a leg up stair to allow the driver climb in to the vehicle with ease.
-The smaller SUVs are now a great deal safer than they used to be in earlier times and the track distance between the front and rear set of tires provide the cars with greater stability, making the drive a lot more secured. Furthermore, many small highend cars are now available with electronic safety control features that minimize the risks on road.
-There are other additional safety features as available in the smaller SUVs, such as anti-lock breaks, traction control, stability control, standard and special safety airbags, and so on.

Therefore, you see, when it comes to purchasing highend cars for your family, getting small and compact SUVs is the way to go about it.

I have a 2000 Xterra that smoke everytime I come to a stop.?

I have a 2000 Xterra w/ 64000K. I just recently got it fixed after being in a wreck. Everything worked perfect for about 3 days. Now I notice that every time I stop, especially when I put it in park, a lot of white smoke seaps from under the hood right in front of the passenger side closer to the windshield than the front of the car. I have started to smell Anti freeze in the car and strong outside of it, but there are no puddles or any sign of it leaking coolant. However the last time I stopped in my driveway I could hear something sizzling somewhere under the hood, but never could figure out where. It was something obviousley leaking out. Has anyone ever had trouble with this before on Xterra's? or is it most likely something that was caused from my wreck?

one of your cooling hoses has a leak, sounds like yours might be one of the heater hoses that connect to the heater core on the firewall
